Everyone Has Strengths and Weaknesses

I personally once felt insecure while watching “The King: Eternal Monarch.” The handsomeness of the lead actor and his charisma as a king amazed me and also made me feel inferior. His character was so romantic, smart, and handsome that it made me think, “Do I have to become a person that perfect to be able to get a woman who is willing to love me?”

It turns out many of my friends felt the same way. Some even became upset because they were not as beautiful or as slim as certain actresses. This anxiety carried over into real life, so they pushed themselves to reach the “standards” of beauty of the K-drama cast. The question is, if by becoming as smart, as romantic, or as good-looking as those artists, will our lives surely be happy forever?

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and this fact does not reduce your value in God's eyes, because you are His beautiful creation.

So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them. – Genesis 1:27

The phrase “in the image of God” is rendered in the English version as “in His own image.” Yes, we were created in God's image. Indeed, K-drama actors and actresses are handsome and beautiful. However, do not forget the effects of makeup, lighting, and body and facial modification that maximize their visual appearance. It may be that without all that, we are actually more “wow” than they are.

So, you and I need to be proud because we were created according to the image and likeness of God. And one thing is certain, God's work is surely beautiful!

This also applies in terms of character. The outstanding traits displayed in K-dramas are fictional elements designed by scriptwriters. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. In other words, you also have strengths that those artists do not have, so be proud!

Always giving thanks will free you from insecurity when you see K-drama actors, so that you can admire them in a positive way.

Your Life's Course Is Different from a K-Drama

The beautiful portrayal of the life journey of the characters in K-dramas can influence viewers to long for a similar story in their own lives. We want to be the “woman whose body shape is 'less than ideal' but is still loved by a handsome man.” Or, we want to become rich instantly by following the main character's method. As a result, we set unrealistic expectations and even regret our lives for not being as beautiful as a K-drama.

If we think more deeply, we will see that not every problem faced by the main character will be told in the film. Korean drama series are generally aired over 16-20 episodes, each about an hour long. The goal is to keep the story interesting and not make viewers bored. To chase ratings, most stories will also end beautifully, and romantically.

In short, our life journey cannot be compared with a K-drama plot. God has said:

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for peace and not for disaster, to give you a future full of hope.” – Jeremiah 29:11

God's plan for our lives is beautiful, and it can even be more beautiful than the life story of a K-drama character. This is because His plan is specific for each person, according to their strengths and weaknesses. You may not be created to become a doctor, but an artist. Or, you may need to work hard to become a successful businessperson, rather than being born the heir to a billionaire's wealth.

Whatever it may be, God's plan is always good for you. A film is made for entertainment and commercial purposes, whereas our lives are shaped according to God's plan. For example, Abraham had to wait 25 years until Isaac was born. Imagine if this story were made into a K-drama; perhaps the result would not be interesting. Too many scenes of waiting and periods of up and down for the character.

God is more interested in the process, not quick results. Making the achievements of K-drama characters your dreams is perfectly fine, but do not forget to pray and ask for God's guidance toward the future according to His plan. Work hard and keep trying, because your life process is not as short as a 20-episode K-drama. Yet there is a beautiful promise from God waiting for you behind all that struggle.

After knowing the two points above, surely you will no longer be tempted to compare your life story with the story of movie characters. Their stories are written by scriptwriters; your story is written by God, the One who is shaping your life for the glory of His name and for your own good. Amen!
