Why Is Guarding the Heart Necessary? Learning from Daud

I previously discussed guarding the heart through the story of Salomo. This time, I want to talk again about the heart. This time I will explore Daud, the father of Salomo.

Like Salomo, Daud can be a lesson about the importance of guarding the heart. Just as Salomo fell because he was not careful, Daud himself was once negligent in guarding his heart.

Why? Because Proverbs 4:23 says, Guard your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow life. Your life and mine will depend greatly on the condition of the heart.

Challenges in Guarding the Heart

Certainly, guarding the heart is never easy. What challenges can arise?

First, when circumstances are difficult. When income declines, business is sluggish, and many problems occur, our hearts can be affected. The temptation to look for a quick and instant way out can come, even if it goes against God's word. 

Second, when everything is going well. Guarding the heart when things are going well? It feels strange, but it is necessary. When life feels pleasant, lust and laziness can arise. Also, the temptation will come to rely on ourselves instead of God.

This time we will discuss the second one. Good circumstances can make us careless, so guarding the heart no longer feels important.

This is what happened to Daud.

How Daud Failed to Guard His Heart

What was lacking in a man like Daud? He was after God's own heart God, mighty in battle, and as it says in 2 Samuel 8:6, the Lord gave victory wherever Daud went to war. Is that not amazing?

Sadly, he fell because of one trivial thing. It began when he did not go to war against the Ammonites. 

2 Samuel 11:1, In the turn of the year, at the time when kings usually go out to war, Daud sent Joab out with his men and all Israel. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah, while Daud himself remained in Jerusalem.

Daud sent Joab, the commander of his army, to lead the war. Where was Daud at that time? He himself stayed in Jerusalem. While walking on the roof of his palace, that was when he saw the beauty of another man's wife, Batsyeba ( 2 Samuel 11:2 ).

We can guess the next event that would happen. 

2 Samuel 11:4 After that Daud sent men to bring her. The woman came to him, and then Daud lay with her. She had just purified herself from her uncleanness. Then the woman returned to her house. 

It is hard to imagine Daud committing adultery. Yet from just one simple temptation, he fell. The consequence? Daud killed Uria, the husband of Batsyeba, to cover up his evil (2 Samuel 11:17). Batsyeba became pregnant, but her child died (2 Samuel 12:14) and various problems came upon Daud and his descendants (2 Samuel 12:11-12). 

So much evil and misery came from just one sin.

Learning from Daud's Fall into Sin

Daud's fall Daud becomes an important lesson for us. Even a man like Daud, who was so loved by God, could stumble into the sin of adultery. In fact, the consequences were enormous.

What can we learn from Daud who did not guard his heart?

1. A Comfortable Life = No Growth

Comfort in life can make us careless.

Daud experienced it himself. When his commander and troops went off to war, he chose to stay by himself in his residence. Unexpectedly, sin tempted him and caused him to fall. If only Daud had gone to war, perhaps that sinful event would never have happened.

That can happen in our lives as well. When we remain in comfort, like being alone, and no longer want to give and love, our hearts are in danger. If we are not careful, we will sink deeper and deeper into the sting of sin. Without realizing it, our hearts can become deceitful.

Instead, let us keep doing good. As Galatians 6:9 says, Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not lose heart. Do not be lulled by comfort; keep doing good and keep growing.

2. The Temptation of Lust

What can be very tempting for a man, especially a married man? One of them is a woman other than our wife . 

Daud was already married, and even had many wives. However, lust knows no bounds. He saw Batsyeba, and from there his sin began.

Everyone, even those who are already married, is not immune to lust and temptation. In fact, even the smallest temptation can lead to a fall.

Especially with how easily information spreads nowadays. Temptation can appear with just one click or scroll.

Then, how can we resist lust? We need to keep living in holiness, as written in Hebrews 12:14, Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness, for without holiness no one will see the Lord. 

When we desire what is holy, lust will not be able to tempt us. That is why we need to keep loving God and holding on to His word. Living in God's word and fighting against temptation will extinguish lust, so that we remain holy.

Therefore, keep holding on to God's word. Love what is holy. Temptation will surely have no effect!

How Is My Heart Today?

Everything we have learned above says this to us again: guarding the heart is an absolute necessity. Especially for men.

How is the condition of your heart today? If you are still striving hard to guard it, congratulations to you. But if you are starting to be tempted or becoming too comfortable, let us strive to return to the right path.

Believe it, your effort will not be in vain! Living holy with a heart that is right will bring one great reward : God's favor.
