Good News from the Surabaya Congregation - Niluh

In February 2018, Mrs. Niluh was introduced to GKDI Surabaya by a sister. Niluh came to know our community through GKDI’s Facebook page. She often followed the testimonies shared there and sometimes sent messages asking for prayer. However, only after hearing the testimony of someone whose character was changed through Bible Study did Niluh finally find the courage to join and learn the word.

At the first meeting, Niluh was hesitant and felt insecure about sharing her problems. But after talking for a while and being asked what her hope was from Bible Study, Niluh wept and expressed her desire to change her angry temperament.

In daily life, Niluh works selling fried snacks, and her husband, Kadek, works as a construction laborer. They have been blessed with three daughters. Many of the problems in Niluh’s household were rooted in her angry character. She often quarreled with her husband and was also not close to her children because they were afraid of her.

At the next meeting, Niluh shared how for the past three years she had longed to seek God. Niluh had once come to a church, but no one had yet taught her about the word of God; she had never even opened the Bible. After attending one Bible Study meeting after another, Niluh became more enthusiastic and open. She finally understood that her angry character led her into sin and made God grieve.

Niluh went through challenge after challenge in order to change her bad temper. She began having regular quiet times, and also learned to be patient and to communicate without being provoked into anger. She did all of this diligently, until her husband noticed the change. Kadek was surprised and at the same time happy to see how Niluh had become more patient with their children. Niluh was also guided to respect her husband, not only in words, but also in her thoughts and body language. More than that, she learned to forgive her in-laws, even asking their forgiveness when she returned home to Bali.

From being hot-tempered to being patient, from feeling inferior to becoming confident, from not knowing the word of God to becoming someone who obeys His word. It was this conviction and longing that changed Niluh, led her to repent, and finally moved her to decide to be baptized. On June 28, 2018, Niluh became a disciple with Kadek’s full support.

Today, Kadek is also interested in learning the word of God. From being an unbeliever and living with the fear of being cast out by his relatives, Kadek has become someone committed to studying the Bible. All because Niluh was willing to be a light in their family.
