Quiet time should let you enjoy a beautiful “meeting” with God. In reality, this does not always happen. Besides the four attitudes described on the previous page, the next three attitudes will help you find God in your quiet time:
5. Consistent and Disciplined

It does take strong determination to change lazy habits and procrastination. Especially in today’s digital era, when the exchange of information happens so quickly and seems never-ending. Accessing all kinds of information is now in the palm of our hand, and this is very beneficial.
On the other hand, not a few people are lulled, even enslaved, by technology. Addiction to using smartphones, whether for playing games, watching videos, being active on social media, chatting, or reading news risks lowering a person’s productivity. And this also affects his spiritual life.
“A little more sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest,” then poverty will come like an intruder, and scarcity like an armed man. – Proverbs 24:33-34
This verse does not refer to sleeping too long or folding one’s arms all the time. The phrase “a little more” means putting off what ought to be done. Small things, like checking your phone for a moment, watching online videos for a moment, checking social media for a moment, without realizing it have wasted much of our time.
To have a strengthening quiet time, habits like these must be left behind. Otherwise, your personal time with God will be taken up by less important things. As a result, quiet time is done briefly, in a rush, or half-heartedly and far from focused. It can be certain that the results will also be less than optimal.
Rather than being enslaved by technology, it is better for you to be the master who rules technology, by using it with the right time, way, and purpose.
Opening spiritual websites and reading spiritual articles as references for quiet time is perfectly fine. However, make sure you are not tempted to do other things with your phone or tablet. If you are not confident in your self-control, it is better to put your gadget away during quiet time.
Train yourself to be a disciplined person. Make the most reasonable daily schedule, according to your rhythm of life. If you do it consistently, surely your life will be more orderly and disciplined, and of course, your quiet time more meaningful.
For God has given us not a spirit of fear, but a spirit that awakens power, love, and self-discipline. – 2 Timothy 1:7
6. Obedient

In the Bible, there are many stories about obedience and disobedience, along with their respective consequences. For example, Moses was not permitted to set foot in Canaan because he was not obedient (Numbers 20:12), and Abraham became the father of all who believe (Romans 4:16-17) because he obeyed God’s command, even the most difficult one (Hebrews 11:17).
God does not force people to obey Him, but gives us free will or free choice. However, obeying His commands is our expression of gratitude as a people who have been redeemed. Not only reading and meditating on the word, we also need to do it.
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only; otherwise you deceive yourselves. – James 1:22
If God gives a specific command, will we obey, or offer all kinds of excuses to defend ourselves?
When God says, forgive the person who hurt you, repay evil with good, are we willing to do it?
When God says, do not worry; rejoice, are we willing to cast off that worry and rejoice even when circumstances are not good?
Even though it is not easy, keep obeying God’s commands, because our life is not for pleasure alone, but to please Him.
Yet I live, no longer I myself, but Christ lives in me … – Galatians 2:20a
7. A Thankful Heart

Giving thanks can make everything feel easier and lighter. Realizing that every breath we take is grace from Him will move us to live rightly and no longer waste time.
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of people were infected by the virus and thousands of lives were lost every day. No matter how rich a person was or how strictly he guarded his health, the risk of infection was always there. Meanwhile some of us remained healthy and safe. Is this not an extraordinary source of gratitude ?
Give thanks for every day the Lord gives. Do not let a single day pass without praying and reading His word. Having a thankful heart will make your quiet time a delight, not a burden.
Give thanks because God chose you to be His disciple from among the billions of people on earth. For not everyone has the opportunity to hear the word, and not everyone who hears is willing to open his heart and believe. If you hear the word and believe it, you are a fortunate person.
Jesus answered: “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not.” – Matthew 13:11
When you wake in the morning, long for fellowship with Him through prayer and the reading of the word. Long for the Lord Himself, not merely for His blessings. Wait for the Lord, and not merely for answers to your prayers. Gratitude will make you enjoy each day, whatever your condition. Difficulties will not keep you from having quiet time. Instead, difficulties will drive you to truly seek His face.
If we want to find God through quiet time, we must come to Him with the right attitude. Are we truly seeking God, honoring Him, willing to learn, humble, disciplined, obedient, and full of gratitude? If something is missing, cultivate it at once. May quiet time become a moment of meeting with God that will change your heart and life every day. Amen.
