A Life Full of Meaning, Can I Have It?

As I entered my teenage years, I kept wondering what my existence in this world meant. At that time I did not understand why God created me. I felt weary, and even thought, how tormenting it would be if I had to live year after year with feelings like this. If I were to live for 75 years without meaning, how miserable I would be! 

Do you feel the same way, not knowing the meaning of your life? Why were you born into this world? You do not know how to live through your boring and empty days. Something is missing in your life, but you do not know what it is. 

Come, discover a life that is full of meaning and purpose through God’s word below.

Wealth Is No Guarantee of Happiness

Do not wear yourself out to get rich; stop giving your attention to it. When you fix your eyes on it, it is gone, for it suddenly sprouts wings and flies to the sky like an eagle. – Proverbs 23:4-5

Some people think that wealth is the source of happiness. For the sake of riches, they are willing to do anything so they can enjoy everything they desire: endless money, popularity, prestigious status, the perfect partner, luxurious homes and cars. But is that really true?

For all that is in the world, the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and the pride of life, is not from the Father but from the world. And this world is passing away with its desires, but whoever does the will of God lives forever. – 1 John 2:16-17

The verse above reminds us that everything that exists and comes from this world will pass away. But the person who does the will of God will have eternal life. As long as you focus on seeking worldly things, you will be disappointed, heartbroken, wounded, miserable, sorrowful, and even crushed.

Pursue what is eternal, not what is temporary. And you can only find it in God. 

Worldly Pleasures Are Meaningless

I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But behold, this also was meaningless. Of laughter I said, “It is madness,” and of pleasure, “What use is it?” – Ecclesiastes 2:1-2 

At one point, in the 1980s, I began to long for happiness. I tried to find it by going to a series of rock concerts in Indonesia. This activity satisfied and fulfilled my desires because it made me forget for a moment the heaviness of reality. I smoked and did whatever pleased my heart. “Yes!” I thought. “This is the true meaning of life: freedom and having fun.”

But at night, when it was time to sleep, my eyes could hardly close. How brief the happiness I felt was… After coming home from the concert, I felt empty again. My life was far from meaningful.

Are you thinking that you want to enjoy life as freely as possible? To have fun first, and then one day, when you are old, you will seek God and the meaning of life? 

In reality, when you succeed in getting it, you will instead be enslaved by the pleasures and enjoyments of this world itself.

All things are wearisome, more than one can say; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. – Ecclesiastes 1:8 

Human beings tend never to be satisfied, no matter how much pleasure and enjoyment they obtain. They want more and more. And what is the reward of all that? Nothing. Instead, you grow farther from God, even trapped in the whirlpool of lust and sin (Ephesians 4:19).

Seek God, and You Will Live

For thus says the LORD to the house of Israel: “Seek Me and live!” – Amos 5:4

When your life is only about finding and enjoying what the world offers, you will be far from happy. The Bible says that when we seek God, we will receive life from Him. Even if it sounds clichéd, that is the real truth. Your life will have no meaning without God. 

“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” – John 8:32 

Use your life to seek God’s truth in His word, and that word will set you free. If you do not know how, contact a community that can help you go deeper into God’s word.

Do not waste the time God has given you. Life is short. Decide to fill it with eternal things that come from the Giver of Life. Surely, your life will be far more meaningful because you will be holding on to something eternal, not something temporary. Amen!
