Is Diligently Reading God's Word Enough?

When worshiping, having quiet time, studying, or teaching God's Wo rd, we will certainly open the Bible and trace its contents. Then, have we ever asked why we must do it? Is it because we thirst for truth? Is it as proof that we have mastered spiritual materials or are able to memorize many verses?

What, really, is the point of diligently reading God's Wo rd?

The Purpose of Reading God's Wo rd

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. – Psalm 119:105

The verses of God's Wo rd are not only to be read and memorized. The Word contains God's voi ce itself. The Word is the guide that Go d gives to us so that we may live our lives and solve every problem in Go d's way. Therefore, the purpose of diligently reading God's Wo.

rd is so that we may: 1. Be Able to Become the Light of the World

The Bible consists of two parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament contains God's promises about the coming of Jesus, the Redeemer. The New Testament contains the fulfillment of those promises, the work of salvation that Jesus accomplished for humanity.

Above all that, God's wo

rd contains God's truth, which we can learn through the experiences of Bible characters. There are those who were upright and obedient (for example, Joseph and Daniel), those who were cunning and persistent (such as Jacob), those who were disobedient (Jonah), and those who experienced great repentance (Paul). God did not make these figures known only for their good qualities. He allowed both the good and the bad to be recorded in the Word so that we would know God's truth.

rd , we know what is right and what is not right according to God's standard. The Word is like a lamp that lights our lives. If we live according to His Word, our lives will become a blessing to others. We become a light in the family, in the workplace, in the neighborhood, and even, not impossibly, in much wider spheres."Let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." – Matthew 5:16

2.  Becoming More Like Jesus

As disciples of Jesus, each day we surely remain consistent in

quiet time . Some have done it regularly for years, some for the past few months, and some perhaps only recently. Whether you have done it for a long time or are still new to it, try reflecting on this:Have I practiced God's wo rd that I read? “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?” – James 2:14

God's Wo

rd is not merely routine reading, but spiritual food that makes our character and actions more and more like Jesus. If we read the Word without practicing its contents, we are no different from the hypocritical Pharisees and teachers of the law. But carrying out God's wo rd is a sign that we are true disciples of Jesus. “You see that faith was working together with works, and by works faith was made complete ... that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.” – James 2:22-24

Which Christlike qualities do you already have at this time? Which works of Christ do you do every day?

If from year to year our spiritual life does not grow, even though every day we have

quiet time , we need to examine our hearts: perhaps we have not yet become doers of the Word. Those who do not yet know God will see us like an empty barrel that makes a loud sound because we do not live out the Word that we study.3. Bringing Others to Salvation

Jesus went throughout all Galilee; He taught in their synagogues and proclaimed the gospel of the Kingdom of God and healed every disease and weakness among the people. – Matthew 4:23

In the past Jesus proclaimed the gospel by walking on foot to faraway places. Road conditions then were not as good as they are now, and there were no telephones, much less cars or motorcycles.

Now we live in a far more comfortable age; there are vehicles, social media, and the internet. Therefore, use all these means to proclaim the gospel to those closest to you who do not yet know God, to those who are heavily burdened, who are sick, who are despairing, so that they may be saved when they believe and com

mit to following Jesus. “Then He said to them: "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” – Mark 16:15

Ready or not, accepted or rejected, loved or hated, we must proclaim the gospel if we are serious about loving Go

d . Let us not be selfish. We have already experienced many positive changes through the Word; invite others to know Christ so that their lives may also be transformed.God's Wo

Many people have proven it, including you and me, how our lives change for the better when we are willing to submit to and do God's wo rd .
