Maximize the Potential of God's Word in Your Life

Have you ever been curious about someone and wondered, “Why is their spiritual life growing so much? How could they change so drastically after studying God’s Word, while I seem to stay the same?”

Why is it that we, who diligently read the Bible and know that God’s Word is mighty and powerful, do not really feel its benefits?

How can we get the maximum potential from God’s Word?

God’s Word Does Not Work “Just Like That”

Some time ago, I had a conflict with a friend because of her attitude and words that hurt me. When she realized it, my friend sincerely apologized. But my ego and emotions made me unwilling to reply to her message. I wanted to a little punish her so that she would feel the hurt I felt.

Actually, I knew my attitude was wrong. That is why I prayed, and God reminded me of a snippet of His Word. After reading the chapter, I cried, realizing how evil I was. My heart was far from gentle, far from God’s standard of righteous living. So I decided to make peace and forgive my friend.

That incident became proof of how the Word works in my life, but only when I am willing to take action. It is like having a sophisticated phone but not wanting to learn its functions, so we can only use it to make calls. In the same way, for God’s Word to have its maximum impact on our lives, we must recognize and make use of all its power.

The Four Powers of the Word

All Scripture inspired by God is indeed useful for teaching, for pointing out wrong, for correcting behavior and for training people in righteousness. In this way every person who belongs to God is equipped for every good work. – 2 Timothy 3:16-17

1. Teaching (Teaching)

Teaching is the most basic function of God’s Word. Actually, not only the Word, but motivational or self-development books can also teach you something. Through God’s Word, we can know who God is, what He feels and what He is like, and what He has done since thousands of years ago. The Word also gives a picture of human character, divine truth, salvation history, and much more.

2.  Rebuking (Pointing Out Wrong)

Many people use the Bible only for the first point, merely making it a good book (good book), not a book containing God’s messages (God’s book). This is not wrong, but it is less than maximal. The benefit of the Word will stop there as mere knowledge, so that your life does not experience significant change.

The purpose “that the person who belongs to God may be equipped for every good work” in the verse above will not be achieved if the Bible becomes only a book of knowledge for you. You must move up to the second level (rebuking), where God’s Word can point out your wrong. Like the incident above: God’s Word rebuked me, telling me that my action was wrong.

At this level, the Word functions like a mirror that shows there is a streak of dirt on my face. However, its potential will stop only here if I do not let God’s Word enter the next stage, namely correcting.

3. Correcting (Correcting Behavior)

Receiving rebuke without making correction is like someone who knows the face is smeared with dirt, but just leaves it there. Already knowing it is wrong, but not taking action (correcting). Do not expect change in your life as long as you do not correct your behavior according to the Bible’s direction.

The problem is, not many people are willing to let the Bible work in their lives this far. God’s Word often shows areas in us that must be corrected, but we reject it.

If you do not let His Word straighten out your life, that Word cannot play a role in changing your life.

4. Training in Righteousness (Training People in Righteousness)

The highest level of the Bible’s role is training people in righteousness. Training and teaching are two different things. Teaching is a process of transferring knowledge or skill, while training has a broader and deeper function. In training, time and the involvement of the one who trains are needed, more than just a process of passing knowledge to the one being taught.

An example of training is when we raise a child so that he becomes a good person. Of course, we need time to consistently build relationship, involvement, and our attitude as an example, and to walk together through every stage of the child’s growth. Its nature is long-term, not just in a class lasting 1-2 hours.

If you allow God’s Word to work in your life, it will train you to become a new and remarkable person in Jesus. This is a lifelong process. If you reach this level, it means you have obtained the maximum potential of what God’s Word can do for your life.

How far God’s Word can shape you depends on your own response. These are the attitudes you must have so that the Word can work to the fullest:

1. Do Not Harden Your Heart

But whenever it is said: "Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” – Hebrews 3:15 

The power of God’s Word is extraordinary; you do not need to doubt it. But if you keep hardening your heart, that great power will produce no impact at all in your life.

2. Receive the Word Willingly and Study It

Now the Jews in that city were more noble than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with all eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to find out whether these things were so. – Acts 17:11

Our attitude in viewing God’s Word will change our lives. Why is it said that the Jews in Berea were better than those in Thessalonica? Because they received God’s Word willingly and studied it.

With the two keys above, you can change the question ‘how can other people change so much after studying the Word, while I remain like this?’ into:

• Have I received God’s Word willingly?
• Do I take time to truly study it? In other words, you are not merely checking off a checklist (checklist) quiet time, but truly searching out the truth of His Word.

3. Do It

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only; otherwise you deceive yourselves. – James 1:22

When you know God’s command, but do not do it, you are actually deceiving yourself. For the Word of God is living and sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12), but it will not change your life if you do not live it out.

God’s Word holds tremendous potential to teach, point out wrong, correct behavior, and train us in righteousness. However, the benefit of all that potential depends on your attitude toward the Word itself.

If you do not harden your heart, are willing to receive and study His Word, and do it with joy, believe this: God’s Word will work in your life in an extraordinary way, and you will be amazed by it.
