To Live Is Christ, To Die Is Gain

Daniel A. Aruan, a brother from the Singles Ministry in Surabaya, had not yet been baptized for a full year, yet his life as a true Christian is worthy of being an example and model.

Nine years ago, Daniel’s older sister, Risna, from the Malang congregation, introduced him to a brother from the Surabaya congregation named Tantok. Daniel, who at that time was in a relationship with a female friend, only had the chance to attend Bible studies a few times. Since his female friend was not yet willing to know God more deeply, Daniel’s studies were never completed.

On the other hand, Tantok kept in touch with Daniel. In 2018, the two met again for coffee, and at that time, Daniel was no longer with his former female friend. In April that year, Daniel decided to study the Bible again. 

During his studies, the effort to leave sin behind was the hardest part for Daniel. Yet the support and encouragement of the brothers, along with their persistence in praying together to overcome his struggles, made Daniel feel that he was not alone in his fight. He was determined to seriously conquer his sins and repent. 

When studying about the cross, Daniel shed tears. He was moved to see how deeply the Lord truly loved him, a person full of sin who had made many mistakes in life. Daniel realized how precious the Lord’s love is for humanity. After four months of studying, on August 18, 2018, Daniel firmly decided to become a disciple of Christ.

From that day on, Singles Ministry Surabaya was never the same again. Daniel, who was pleasant and witty, always made the atmosphere lively with his jokes and cheerful spirit. Not only did he often ask for advice and readily accept correction, he also had great zeal in learning and being guided in the Lord. 

In his spiritual life, Daniel did not focus only on himself, but always paid attention to others. He cared deeply for those who were studying the word, as well as for the sisters who needed help. Daniel was also active in teaching at the Saturday Academy held in Gubeng, Surabaya, since November 2018. He loved the children under his care and was creative in leading lesson activities. His dream was that one day he could help his younger sibling and parents come to know the truth.

On April 31, 2018, a day before his 30th birthday, Daniel went home to the Father’s house, most likely due to a heart attack. Although we were all saddened and could hardly believe his passing, we all know that he is now joyful with the Father in heaven.

Farewell, Daniel. You have finished the race well and reached the finish line with steadfast faith.

Daniel always looked strong and cheerful, even when he was not in good condition, because he wanted others to feel happy. He diligently came up with interesting ideas so the children would be excited to learn at the Saturday Academy. Heaven is very fortunate to have you, Daniel.” (Novie)

“Daniel was a very kind, warm, giving, caring, and sincere person. Every time we met, he always asked about my work, health, and repentance. He loved God and always strove to give his best for Him. Although I still can hardly believe his passing, I believe this is the best plan for Daniel.” (Jeffry)

“Cheerful, caring, and humble. These three words truly describe Daniel. Although he had struggles that sometimes stole his joy, he kept inspiring us that God is greater than his problems. In his final days, Daniel shared his journey of faith with a friend who was being helped to know God. He believed that friend could change.
