It Is Time for Us to Become Mature Christians

Maturity is not merely a matter of physical growth. A person's maturity is also not determined by age. Even as the years increase, one's way of thinking does not always become more mature. It is not uncommon for someone advanced in age to still have childish attitudes and patterns of thought. On the other hand, many young people show maturity in the way they think, act, and make decisions.

Then, what does it mean for Christians to be mature? What steps need to be taken to achieve it?

The Meaning of a Mature Christian

dewasa - gkdi 1

There is a story about two employees who worked at the same company. The first employee had worked there for ten years. The second had worked there for only two years. Yet when a leadership succession took place, it was the second employee who was entrusted to run the company.

Unable to accept that decision, the first employee complained. Why was he, who had worked much longer, not appointed as the trusted one?

After it was investigated, it turned out that the employee who had worked for ten years had mastered only the work level of someone who had worked for two years. By contrast, his coworker who had worked only two years had mastered skills equal to an employee with ten years of experience. Therefore, he was considered capable of leading the company.

Brothers and sisters, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but be mature in your thinking! – 1 Corinthians 14:20

Becoming a mature Christian means that you grow not only in your mindset, but also spiritually. And this is a process that you must continue to go through, not something that can be gained instantly.

Here are the things you need to do to become a mature Christian.

Always Wanting to Learn

dewasa - gkdi 2

And be like newborn babies, always longing for pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow and obtain salvation. – 1 Peter 2:2

When you decide to become a true disciple of Jesus and follow the Lord, you are like a newborn baby. And the best nutrition for a baby is pure milk. Likewise, to become a mature Christian, you must fill yourself with pure things, including:

The willingness to learn is one of the requirements for growth. There is no such thing as enough learning. Learning makes you a better person every day. So, keep learning without ceasing, all your life, so that you may be increasingly equipped and perfected in the Lord.

Growing Toward Christ

dewasa - gkdi 3

… but holding firmly to the truth in love, let us grow in all things toward Him, Christ, who is the Head. – Ephesians 4:15

To become a mature Christian, you must grow to become more like Christ, in accordance with the truth you have received. Keep growing continually, not so that people will notice you, count you worthy, trust you to go up to the pulpit, or choose you as a leader. Grow because of your love for the Lord, out of a longing to become more like Jesus Christ.

Develop these five traits so that your spiritual life may become more mature:

  • Grow in character
Instead of always wanting to please other people, you become more focused on pleasing the heart of God. You become more diligent and do not give up easily when facing life's problems and challenges (Romans 12:12).
  • Grow in good habits
For example, you do not miss Sunday worship, midweek fellowship, personal mentoring, and times of gathering with fellow believers (Hebrews 10:25).
  • Grow in love
You love sincerely, expecting nothing in return, showing no favoritism, without conditions, willing to sacrifice, and quick to forgive (1 John 4:11).
  • Grow in the way you think
You no longer use the standards of the world, but focus on the things of God (Colossians 3:1-2). Not being busy thinking about things too lofty and making issues out of trivial matters, but thinking simply, with a right mindset that is in accordance with God's word (Romans 12:16).
  • Grow into a new creation
You leave behind your old self (Colossians 3:9), so that you become a better person and are no longer enslaved by sin.
.

When you have a heart that is always willing to learn and grow, you will be transformed into a completely different person! Do not let the world shape you, but let the Lord shape you into a mature Christian. With spiritual maturity, you will not only become stronger and more faithful, but also be able to help others know the Lord and grow in Him.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what the will of God is: what is good, pleasing to God, and perfect. – Romans 12:2
