Prayers for a Husband from a Virtuous Wife

Have you prayed for your husband today? A virtuous wife understands how important it is to pray for her husband. What prayers can you lift up to God for your husband? 

Why Is It Necessary to Pray for Your Husband?

The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” – Genesis 2:18 

God had a clear purpose in creating Eve, namely to be a helper for Adam. In marriage, that is the role of a wife: to be a helper to her husband. Praying for our husbands means involving the Lord and asking for His help to help our husbands. If you are not the one who faithfully prays for your husband, who will be? You are his life companion, his soulmate, and his fellow worker.

An excellent wife who can find? She is more precious than jewels. – Proverbs 31:10

A virtuous wife is not only beautiful physically or skilled at managing the household. She also fears the Lord, has faith, and faithfully offers prayers for her husband and family. So, having a virtuous wife is one of the most beautiful blessings a husband can receive. 

What can a wife pray for on behalf of her husband?

4 Prayers for Your Husband 

1. For a Heart That Trusts and Submits to God

But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. – 1 Corinthians 11:3

The verse above explains the role of a husband in marriage, namely to be the head of his wife. Therefore, a wife needs to submit to her husband, as it is written in Ephesians 5:22-23, “Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord, for the husband is the head of the wife just as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of the body.”

The head of the husband is Christ. That means a husband must submit to Christ. How can a husband lead his wife and family in the Lord if he himself does not submit to Christ? Most likely, he will instead lead his family down the wrong path, which can bring destruction.

So, one thing you can do to help your husband is to pray for his heart so that he may continue to trust and submit to the Lord.

While we were still dating, my husband once said that he found it difficult to ask for help and was reluctant to tell me about his problems. As a man, he had pride and did not want to look weak. 

But little by little he began to open up and was willing to tell me about the problems he faced. He changed because he wanted to keep being guided by and submit to Christ. Even though my husband is now more open, I never stop praying for him, to guard his heart. Perhaps in the future, there may be challenges that could change my husband's heart, so I must keep praying for him.

Have you prayed for your husband's heart? If not, begin to offer a prayer like this: “May the Lord always guard his heart so that he remains trusting and submissive to God, and does not depend on himself or on other things.” 

2. For Wisdom and Understanding 

A husband's leadership has a major influence on the quality of his marriage. A husband must know where he wants to lead the marriage and family he leads. Therefore, he must be wise so that he can make the right decisions. The problem is, wisdom and understanding are not automatically present in everyone. 

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God for it, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. – James 1:5

The Lord says that if we need wisdom, we must ask God for it, and God will give it. Wisdom and understanding from the Lord will guide a husband so that he can make the right decisions. However, it may not be every time that he is able to ask the Lord for wisdom. 

As a helper, you are the one who needs to persevere continually in praying for your husband. Surely the Lord will give His wisdom and understanding to your husband.

3. For His Health

Health is a gift God has given us. A virtuous wife will protect, care for, and pray for her husband's health. 

For no one ever hates his own body, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church. – Ephesians 5:29

Every married couple surely wants to grow old together. To do many things together, and even to see their children and grandchildren grow and serve the Lord. To be able to enjoy those things, we need to have good health.

Before we got married, I already knew the history of my husband's illness . This made me depend even more on the Lord in prayer, and be diligent in caring for and helping to maintain my husband's health. Whether or not your husband has a history of illness, persevere continually in prayer for his health. 

4. For His Work

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything make your requests known to God by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving. – Philippians 4:6

Worry is a human feeling. But what if your life is controlled by excessive worry? You will overthink, have trouble sleeping, and may even live in fear. The Lord has been so good, giving us His word as guidance so that we do not worry about anything at all. This includes work and daily needs. Even so, we still have to work, pray, and give thanks. 

During the pandemic, the company where my husband worked continued to operate normally, without layoffs or salary cuts. Even so, I kept praying that the Lord would bless the company where my husband worked. Also, that he would remain productive and be able to enjoy his work even while facing various pressures and problems.

A wife's role in marriage is to be a helper to her husband. Faithfully offering prayers for your husband is one way to help your spouse. Pray that your husband will always have a heart that trusts and fears the Lord, for his health, for wisdom and understanding, and for his work. May the Lord answer your prayers. Amen.
