Gossip: Wrong or Normal?

If you are a male reader, do not rush to close this article because you feel that exchanging gossip is not a man's habit. In fact, according to a study by the Social Issues Research Centre (SIRC), men gossip just as much as women. Indeed, there is a difference in whom they gossip with. However, the topics of gossip are similar, and men tend to talk more about themselves.

I used to think gossiping was something normal. My college friends and I liked doing it. We gossiped about the shortcomings of lecturers, other students, and people we knew, until we sometimes lost track of time, and even forgot to study.

So, is gossip a sin? What does God say about gossip? And, how can we change the habit of gossiping?

Why Gossip?

According to the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI), gossip is talk about other people, a story negative about someone, or backbiting. This has become so common that many social media accounts and entertainment shows have appeared that specifically discuss celebrity gossip.

Often, the motivation for gossip comes from an attitude of looking down on other people and considering oneself better and more right. In fact, that is not necessarily the case. The desire to gossip about others also comes from feelings of inferiority or envy. By talking about other people's shortcomings, you feel better than those you gossip about.

Whether we gossip just for fun, for entertainment, to be accepted in a group, or to vent frustration, this habit has dangerous long-term effects. Gossip that goes too far risks becoming material for bullying (harassment), and may even cause depression and trauma. By gossiping, whether you realize it or not, directly or indirectly, there is a possibility that you are hurting others. This is certainly not what God desires.

3 Tips to Break the Gossip Habit

Overcome the habit of gossiping by applying these three things:

1. Think Before You Speak

The prudent act with knowledge, but fools display their folly. – Proverbs 3:16

God created us with reason and understanding. So, how good it would be if we think before we speak. Gossip not only has the potential to damage the reputation and the mental and physical condition of the person you gossip about, but also damages relationships. Imagine yourself in the position of the person being gossiped about. Would you be happy if facts about your life were twisted, your faults were talked about, or your name was spoken of badly?

Before you are tempted to gossip, remember: THINK before you speak.”

T Is it True? (Is it true?)

HIs it Helpful? (Is it helpful?)

I Is it Inspiring? (Does it inspire?)

NIs it Necessary? (Is it necessary?)

KIs it Kind? (Is it kind?)

Leave the habit of gossiping before it is too late. It is not impossible that someday you will be opposed or hated for spreading someone's disgrace or false news about them. When that happens, your own reputation is the one that will be damaged. You will be labeled a gossip or someone who cannot be trusted. And, if you enjoy gathering with people who love to gossip, it is only a matter of time until you yourself are also gossiped about.

2. Talk About Things That Build Up

Let no corrupt talk come out of your mouth, but only what is good for building up, as needed, so that it may give grace to those who hear. – Ephesians 4 : 29

If you think before you speak, then surely the words that come out of your mouth will be something that builds up. Dare to change the topic of conversation when someone begins gossiping about another person's faults with you. Instead, talk about the achievements, goodness, perseverance, or things that are inspiring and positive about others. Surely, your conversation will become a quality discussion that pleases God's heart.

Whoever hides hatred has lying lips; whoever slanders is a fool. When words are many, transgression is unavoidable, but whoever restrains his lips is wise. – Proverbs 10:18-19

When you are tempted to gossip, remember that God does not like people who love to gossip. Instead, set your heart on speaking things that bring blessing and love to others.

Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; whoever opens wide his lips comes to ruin. – Proverbs 13:3

3. Seek a Good Circle of Friends

Blessed is the one who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on His law day and night. – Psalm 1:1-2

You will become like those with whom you spend much of your time. find a community that can help you leave negative habits behind, including gossiping. The right community will help you experience a change in mindset and lifestyle in a positive direction. As God's word says, “Bad company corrupts good character (1 Corinthians 15:33).”

The habit of gossiping will divert you from your life purpose . Your life will feel hollow, empty, and without joy, because you are busy talking about other people's lives instead of focusing on your own growth. Evaluate your circle of friends, and place yourself in the right community.

Stop the habit of gossiping by thinking before speaking, talking about things that build up, and choosing the right community. Give it a try!
