“Am I a Bucin or Not?” - Recognize the Signs of a Love Slave!

gkdi lagu

Bucin, or “slave of love,” is a term for people who are crazy about love, so they are willing to do anything for the person they love. In short, people who are bucin are enslaved to their beloved. The symptoms often strike those who are teenagers, though there are also adults who experience it.

Even though the term bucin only became popular recently, this tendency is nothing new. Bucin already existed thousands of years ago, and some stories about it are even written in the Bible! What does the Word of God say about bucin people?

Signs of a Bucin

A person who becomes a love slave usually shows a number of common symptoms, including:
  • Their life 24/7 is always about that person
  • They almost always say yes to whatever their partner
  • wants
  • They forget their friends or drift away from their friends
  • Posts about their partner always fill their social media
  • They go everywhere together
If you are not sure whether you belong in the bucin category, answer these two questions:

1. What Makes Me Fall in Love: Looks or Character?

bucin - gkdi 1

After that Samson fell in love with a woman from the Valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. – Judges 16:4

Delilah came from the Valley of Sorek. This valley, which marked the boundary of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah, stretched to the coastal plain where the Philistines lived. In short, Delilah was a local Israelite girl, from the same people as Samson.

The story of Samson and Delilah moved quickly, and most likely when he fell in love, Samson did not yet know Delilah very well, other than her appearance. Before meeting Delilah, Samson had already married a Philistine woman simply because “he liked her” (Judges 14:1-3).  Not only that, he had also committed adultery with another woman in Gaza (Judges 16:1).

Looking at Samson’s experiences, we may guess that he fell in love with Delilah because of her beauty, not her character. In Judges 16:5, we see that Delilah was someone who loved money. She was willing to do anything, even sell out the leader of her own people for silver from the rulers of the Philistine cities. She also liked to nag and force her way to get what she wanted (Judges 16:16).

-

As a result, because of this bucin-level love, Samson told Delilah the secret of his strength. This was the downfall for Samson, which also led to the end of his life. The Lord left Samson. He lost his strength and was captured by the Philistines.

The Philistines seized him, gouged out both his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza. There he was bound with two bronze chains, and in the prison he was made to grind. – Judges 16:21

What kind of person are you falling in love with? Do you like them because of an attractive face, without considering their character? As happened to Samson, God can leave you when you pair yourself with the wrong person (2 Corinthians 6:17-18). His beautiful plan for you can be ruined because of your own mistake.

What kind of future do you want? Do you want to become a slave to love, or open your eyes to your partner’s character? Remember, your future is in your own hands.

2. Is That Person a Balanced Partner?

bucin - gkdi 2

Do not become unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and lawlessness have in common? Or how can light be joined with darkness? – 2 Corinthians 6:14

Samson and Delilah were both Israelites. But did that automatically make them a balanced couple? Is being from the same tribe, the same church, the same village, or the same religion the criterion for a balanced couple?

In the MEV, the verse above reads, “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers.” Equally yoked speaks of the yoke burden carried by oxen plowing together. If a healthy ox is paired with an unhealthy ox, the healthy one will carry the heavier burden.

A balanced partner is not only about one shared belief, namely believing in Jesus, but also about faith, spiritual health, and vision and mission. Without these things, the healthier party will carry a heavier burden in the relationship.

-

Different beliefs can become a major problem, because the foundations you trust are different. If your partner is not spiritually healthy, you who are healthy will grow tired because you must keep supporting them. For example, always reminding and guiding your partner to have quiet time, grow spiritually, and so on.

Samson and Delilah did not share the same vision and mission. Samson was born as a Nazirite of God, carrying the mission to save the people of Israel from the Philistines (Judges 13:5). But that same mission or dream was not in Delilah. She was more interested in getting a lot of money quickly, no matter how.

How well do you know your partner? Do you close your eyes to their personality as long as they are pleasing to look at, something you can show off to your friends, or always pamper you? If you want to lead many people to know Jesus, does your partner have a similar mission? Do you and your partner both share the dream of building a family in the Lord?

-

Loving your partner with all your heart is a good thing. However, do not let us become bucin, desperate for love, blind in love, slaves to love, so that the things that matter most slip out of our sight. Choose a balanced partner with character above beauty or handsomeness alone.

Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD shall be praised. – Proverbs 31:30
