A family spirit is a bond formed through a sense of togetherness, and its meaning goes beyond cooperation or professional relationships. In a Christian community, it is very important to build togetherness so that the community remains strong and brings wide-reaching influence.
A healthy Christian community is one that meets needs and helps each of its members grow, and can also be a light to those around it. So then, what elements need to be built and maintained so that a sense of togetherness is always present within a community?
1. Uniting the Vision
...therefore make my joy complete by being of the same mind, having the same love, being one in spirit and one in purpose (Philippians 2:2)
A community usually consists of various members, characters, backgrounds, preferences, and of course different ways of thinking. If these differences are not united, they often cause a community to fail to make an impact, both on its members and on the outside environment. However, by uniting each individual to one shared goal, those obstacles can be removed, just as Paul told the church in Philippi, namely to direct their hearts and minds toward one purpose, which is Christ.
2. Easing Selfishness
...doing nothing out of selfish ambition or empty praise. (Philippians 2:3a)
Selfishness is a trait that damages harmony and togetherness. When this trait grows within a community, many negative effects are sure to follow. Instead of togetherness, what grows is competition. There will be much hurt, feelings of being unappreciated, and also disappointment because needs are not being met. One other effect of selfishness is the rise of pride, which is certainly sin in the sight of the Lord (Proverbs 21:4)
3. Cultivating Humility
Rather, in humility consider others more important than yourselves; (Philippians 2:3b)
Each member within the community certainly does not have the same capacity, whether in terms of faith, relationship with God, ability, experience, how they respond to circumstances, and so on. Therefore, humility toward one another is deeply needed so that each person can give from their strengths and receive what is still lacking in them. Humility is greatly favored by God. In Psalm 149, the Lord promises salvation to the humble.
If these three elements of togetherness continue to grow within a community, just imagine what kind of influence we can produce. Beyond being a strong community, impact that we give will be felt by many people, so that the name of the Lord will be increasingly glorified.
