Becoming a Disciple Through Community Care and a Desire to Live Rightly

Community care and a serious response to spiritual life are among the keys to repentance for those who truly want to follow Christ. On Saturday, May 25, 2019, Pematangsiantar Congregation once again received joyful news. Sesliani, who is familiarly called Lia, made the decision to become a true Christian after studying the things above.

This student at one of the universities in Siantar who is active in Campus Ministry is the third of six siblings. Since childhood, Lia has lived with her uncle and aunt. This made her feel that she did not receive enough parental love, and shaped her into a person who was indifferent, quick-tempered, and somewhat shy.

However, from long ago Lia had always had a longing to be close to God. This desire made her willing to spend time in a spiritual community, and she even once led a small group and took on various ministries.

At one point, Lia noticed a change in the character of an upperclassman, who was a sister in the Pematangsiantar Congregation. When this sister shared what had made her change, Lia became interested in studying the Bible.

In mid-January 2019, Lia joined a Bible study. This was not an easy process because she already had a spiritual foundation deeply attached within her. There were many things she questioned, such as who the disciples of Jesus were, and whether this community was the right community that would lead her to the truth of God. Not infrequently, Lia compared a number of things with what she had learned in her previous community.

Yet above all that, there was one thing that felt unique to her, namely the lesson about sin. In that lesson, all her sins were uncovered one by one. Lia felt that her life was truly being cared for, because up to that point no one had ever guided her to deal with sin seriously. She also realized that even though she was active in various ministries, there was much unrighteousness in her life.

Through the perseverance of prayer and the power of the word, Lia was willing to humble herself and carry out the Lord's commands, even though there were still a number of things she did not yet understand. In fact, to build her conviction, she often came and learned from the sisters in the congregation.

When she entered the lesson about the cross, Lia was moved and understood that Jesus sacrificed His life for every person who is willing to repent seriously. To show her seriousness in living out each repentance, she was willing to let go of her sins, which was actually difficult for her to do. Yet she was willing to do it in order to live rightly before God.

After approximately four months of studying the word, Lia firmly decided to become a disciple of Jesus. Many of her bad traits were worn away by the word, and she experienced a number of life changes that impacted the people around her. Now Lia finds it easier to make friends and is more caring toward others.

“I feel happy, grateful, and very proud because God has chosen me to be His disciple,” she said. “God gave me the opportunity to understand the truth of the word, as well as relief after coming out of my sins. And I feel that my spiritual life is truly being cared for.”

Now, Lia is very eager to share her conviction with her friends. May she continue to grow in knowing the Lord and be used even more as His instrument. Glory be only to God. Amen!
