Have we ever prayed and hoped to become more patient, to have self-control (self control), to grow wiser, and in other areas of character where we know that is very good?
But amusingly, what often happens is that unpleasant things, in other words problems, start coming our way. Often, we complain by saying, "I just wanted to learn patience, and now I meet annoying people instead." Or just after deciding to have more self-control, suddenly things come that trigger us. It seems that because of those people or problems, our journey to become patient, wise, and self-controlled is being "hindered".
Is that way of thinking true? On the surface, it may be considered true, especially by our ego, which will automatically always want to be the most right. However, if we dig deeper...the truth is that God's way of working is similar to a vaccine.
A vaccine is actually a virus/bacteria that has been weakened. So when that virus/bacteria is injected, our body will form antibodies. In the end, our body has immunity against certain diseases.
God can also give us a vaccine...depending on which area of our character still needs antibodies because it is weak. The more those problems come & the more we can submit to follow God's way...then we will keep growing until eventually we become strong in that area.
So, if we become more sensitive in recognizing the weaknesses in our own character and problems come that seem to attack that very area...be thankful and learn to respond with humility. Because that means God is giving us a vaccine so that our character becomes stronger and more like Jesus.
Hebrews 12:5-6 says:
And have you forgotten the exhortation that speaks to you as to children: "My son, do not take lightly the discipline of the Lord, and do not lose heart when you are rebuked by Him; for the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He scourges every son whom He acknowledges as His child.
Does your life feel as though you are in a storm right now? Rejoice and learn to respond with humility! Because God is giving you a vaccine so that you may become strong...so that you may become like Him. If we have this perspective, then you can walk through the storm with your head held high...because you know that the Creator of heaven and earth is walking with you.
