Leave Worry Behind by Relying on God

The trials you experience are ordinary trials, not beyond human strength. For God is faithful, and because of that He will not let you be tried beyond your strength. When you are tried, He will give you a way out so that you can endure it. – 1 Corinthians 10:13 

Excessive worry can trigger illness, but it can also become a gentle reminder of God’s goodness. Eddy (55), a brother from Jemaat Bangka (Pangkalpinang) who is affectionately called Koh Eddy, experienced this himself. After studying the Bible personally three years ago, he made the decision to follow Jesus in July 2017. On that same day, Koh Eddy’s wife made the same commitment.

Since childhood, Koh Eddy’s parents had taught him about the Lord Jesus. However, that belief did not necessarily make him fear God. In his younger days, when he was still single, he followed the ways of the world and lived a reckless life. In fact, God had warned him through a number of life problems, one of them in his work. Even so, this warning did not immediately make him turn back to God. 

At one point, Koh Eddy suffered from chronic stomach illness that would not go away. All his efforts to find a modern medical solution failed, and his illness continued for a long time. In desperation, he tried alternative treatment, but that also brought no results. This caused him deep anxiety and led him into depression.

When depression came, he was afraid of being left alone, afraid of driving, and attacked by various other irrational fears. Thankfully, Koh Eddy still remembered God; he just did not know where to begin seeking Him. Although he was fairly active in church activities, he rarely read the Bible. 

A few years ago, Koh Eddy’s wife had studied the Bible with a sister, who was her close friend, but she was not interested in continuing. This time, sister invited Koh Eddy and his wife once again to study the Bible consistently.

Following his wife, Koh Eddy also began to go deeper into God’s word. As he came to know God’s character more deeply, Koh Eddy’s faith to rely on God for his healing also grew stronger. His depression gradually improved, but worry still often appeared when his stomach illness flared up. 

This was where he faced a serious struggle: to keep relying on God or to trust in dark powers. Thankfully, Koh Eddy remained hungry for God’s word. He regularly had his quiet time every day so that his faith and knowledge of God kept growing. He was also in a positive circle of fellowship, building one another up and encouraging one another in the community of GKDI Bangka.

After being baptized, Koh Eddy’s illness had not healed one hundred percent, but praise God, his depression was gone. With limited physical strength, Koh Eddy faithfully attended worship services, morning prayer with the brother every Sunday, and fellowship with the congregation. He was also actively involved in Bible study and in sharing the story of his repentance. One of the disciples he guided was baptized at the end of 2019, and to this day Koh Eddy continues to be his mentor.

Now, with physical condition far better than it was three years ago, Koh Eddy hopes to keep sharing the love and goodness of God that he has received with others. Amen!
