Good News from the Jakarta Congregation - Tasya

From Disappointment to Confidence

Being disappointed by the actions of those who claim to be servants of God can make someone drift away from Him. Yet God works in mysterious ways and chooses His own time to be present in Tasya's life.

This woman, born in Siantar and now living in Jakarta for the past nine years, is the second of five siblings. Growing up in a family that was less than harmonious and carried much bitterness toward the family, made Tasya into a quiet, solitary, reserved, emotional, and selfish person. She also carried disappointment toward people who claimed to be Christians, so she did not trust or respect those who claimed to be servants of God.

One day, Tasya saw a GKDI ad on Instagram. Out of curiosity she clicked the ad link, and was warmly welcomed by GKDI's CS admin. Their conversation went smoothly, but it did not continue and Tasya disappeared without any further news. A week later, Digital Ministry reached out to Tasya again and connected her with the nearest PDA (Bible Discussion Meeting) community closest to where she lived.

At first, Tasya was reluctant to meet the sister who contacted her. However, because she felt bad about refusing, she finally decided to meet. After her meeting with the two sisters (because she was uncomfortable meeting many people), she came to Sunday service at GKDI Jakarta. Since she did not know the location, Tasya went together with the sister who was also picking up her mother, who lived not far from Tasya's boarding house.

During several times of coming to worship, Tasya only observed. She wanted to know the condition of the church and the people in it, whether they were just the same as her past experience. Unexpectedly, she saw that this community was different. As she began to feel comfortable with the congregation, Tasya also attended PDA. Here, she had to interact with many people, something she had always avoided. After that, Tasya accepted the offer to study the Bible which she had previously declined.

In her study sessions, Tasya shared about her disappointment with servants of God. This disappointment made her not want to be too involved with the church and with Christians. However, within the GKDI community, Tasya saw that the foundation being used was the word of God, not personal opinion. Whatever was done was purely based on the desire to do what God commands.

Tasya learned a lot from Bible Study. First of all, she learned to build a consistent relationship with God. Next, she learned to control her emotions when facing people who had long tested her patience. When entering the lesson on sin, although it was difficult, Tasya tried to be more open about herself, her family, and her past. Even though she had wanted to stop studying, she decided not to run away anymore, but to face challenges and grow.

There were many steps of repentance in Tasya that were truly felt by those involved in her Bible Study. In the past, when disappointed or hurt, Tasya chose to keep her distance and cut off contact with the person involved. However, for the first time, Tasya was able to resolve conflict directly, even though there was fear, trembling, and discomfort. This made her relieved and aware that the problem had to be resolved, not avoided.

On March 8, 2020, Tasya made the decision to become a disciple of Jesus. We are proud of her determination to live righteously before God and keep growing. Today, although it is not easy to live as a disciple of Jesus, Tasya continues striving to be a faithful disciple. She invites her boarding-house friends to join this community . We cannot wait for more good news from Tasya, and to witness God use her even more for the glory of His kingdom. Amen.

To God be the glory!
