My Talent: How Do I Discover It?

Every person is created with their own unique qualities, and everyone has talent or gift.

Some people discover their abilities from childhood. Others only discover their talents as adults, after going through many different life experiences.

Yet there are also those who wonder, “Do I really have talent?” Or, “How do I discover talent mine?”

The following verses will help you understand the ins and outs of talent, as well as what kind of mindset you need in order to develop it.

 

Recognize the Different Kinds of Talents

So we have different gifts according to the grace given to us: If the gift is prophecy, let us use it in proportion to our faith. – Romans 12:6a

God gives talents and different gifts to each person.

Some are related to the arts, such as painting, singing, playing music, writing, dancing, sculpting, and so on. Some are technical in nature, for example those related to computer programming, architecture, or machinery. Others rely on analytical strength and empathy, such as those possessed by psychologists and counselors. They can also be related to physical strength, such as sports, and many more.

Whether you are extroverted or introverted, pragmatic or artistic, it does not matter. Every talent is a gift from God that makes you who you are and special in His eyes.

Other Types of Talents

If none of the talents above or any combination of them is found in you, that does not mean you have none. There are many other kinds of gifts that God has given to us.

If it is a gift of serving, let us serve; if it is a gift of teaching, let us teach;...... Whoever gives, let him do it sincerely; whoever leads, let him do it diligently;...... – Romans 12:7-8

For to one the Spirit gives a message of wisdom, and to another the same Spirit gives a message of knowledge. To one the same Spirit gives faith, and to another He gives gifts of healing. – 1 Corinthians 12:8-9

Do you enjoy serving in church and in orphanages, taking part in humanitarian work to help those who are less fortunate and in need of help? That is the talent of serving..

Do you enjoy teaching the word of God, guiding others so that they have abilities or knowledge like the ones you have? Or do you enjoy leading young people, encouraging brothers and sisters who are grieving or spiritually weak? That too is a talent.

If you love sharing, not only your experiences but also your blessings with others, you have the talent of giving or giving.

For those who enjoy leading, inspiring, and encouraging people to do what is right, that is your gift. Likewise, if you are quick to smile, quick to forgive, and empathetic toward others, that is your talent!

So then, how do we uncover it?

Believe in Yourself and in Your Ability

At once the servant who had received the five talents went and put the money to work and gained five more. In the same way, the servant who had received two talents gained two more. – Matthew 25:16-17

In the parable of the talents in (Matthew 25:14-30), the servants who received both five and two talents invested what had been entrusted to them. Both of them were confident and sure of their respective abilities, so they succeeded in managing what belonged to them well. As a result, they gained twice as much as their original capital.

Before I knew the Lord, I was a very insecure. I always felt unlucky and considered myself the most miserable person in the world. Every time I saw other people, I felt like I was nothing compared to them. There was nothing about me to be proud of.

But when I grew closer to the Lord and studied the Word more, I became far more confident. I felt that I was a very fortunate person. I had many treasures in heaven and a future home, where one day I would live together with the Lord. I had knowledge of what is right and wrong.

I found happiness not on the basis of physical appearance, wealth, intelligence, and other things, but because I am valuable and special in the eyes of God.

In 1994, when I joined a grand drama production at church, I played a role that apparently left a deep impression on the audience. That was when I discovered my talent in acting and storytelling. Since then, I have actively written scripts and directed Christmas dramas.

If you are confident and believe in your ability, then work hard to develop it, your talent will shine.

The servant who was given one talent in the parable above (Matthew 25:18) decided to bury it in the ground.

Therefore I was afraid and went and hid my master's talent in the ground. Here, have what belongs to you! – Matthew 25:25

When you are insecure and unsure of your own ability, you will have difficulty discovering the gift that is actually already within you. You become ruled by fear like that servant with one talent, and then decide to withdraw or give up.

Throw away that sense of inferiority far from you. Believe in your ability, and keep striving. Remember that your skill is not born overnight, but needs to be sharpened and developed. There is a time and a process to go through until that talent becomes mature.

Use Your Talent for the Glory of God 

Now, after you have discovered your talent and built your confidence, there is one more thing that must be done.

Serve one another, according to the gift each person has received, as good stewards of the grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as one delivering the words of God; if anyone serves, let him do so with the strength God provides, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To Him belong glory and power forever and ever! Amen. – 1 Peter 4:10

The apostle Peter reminds us that we should serve according to our respective gifts. Not only that, you and I must also be good stewards of those gifts so that the name of God may be glorified!
