Psalm 23: Becoming Followers of the Lord Together

Psalm 23 is one of David's most famous psalms. Many Christians know this chapter by heart. This remarkable work was born out of David's closeness to the Lord. David became follower or a follower of the Lord in the truest sense.

Some of us routinely check social media accounts. We want to know what the daily lives of public figures and our idols are like, whether artists, athletes, endorsers, or public figures. Of course we have reasons forfollowing someone. Maybe that person is inspirational, kind, funny, smart, interesting, and so on.

Now, if the Lord had a social media account, would we follow Him? Or would we actually unfollow because we feel that what He does is not all that important to pay attention to?

Before you answer the question above, come on, let's look at what we need to know about being a follower of the Lord.

What It Means to Be a Follower in Christ's Footsteps

“For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you and left you an example, so that you should follow in His steps.” – 1 Peter 2:21

Being called as Christians should fill us with zeal, because the Lord Jesus has left footprints of example that are worth following. Loving others, living in hope, having faith, and being eager to help are some of His many footprints. Becoming a follower of Christ means following His example so that our character becomes more like His.

What's more, the Lord will enable His followersto bring salvation to others, as Matthew 4:19 says: "Come, follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men."

Beware of Haters, Destroyers of Our Relationship with the Lord

“… and said: "You son of the devil, you are full of all kinds of deceit and wickedness, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord .” – Acts 13:10

Well, it turns out that not only celebrities have haters or people who hate them. Our greatest enemy, the devil, is always intent on destroying our relationship with the Lord. This enemy is unseen but very dangerous because he has every way of twisting the truth.

Still, do not worry. The Bible has already given tips for dealing with this one hater , namely, “Put on the full armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:11). See the full armor of God in Ephesians 6:14-18.

Psalm 23: David's Reasons for Becoming a Follower of the Lord

1. His Love Is Real

Have you ever reached a point where life starts to feel directionless, you always feel lacking, and you lose guidance? This situation happens because we do not give space for the Lord to become the shepherd of our lives.

“A Psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not lack. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters.” – Psalm 23:1-2

There is a truly wonderful promise when we are willing to live under the shepherding of the Lord. God's sincere love is proven real to His faithful followers. By making the Lord the shepherd of our lives, we will be kept far from loneliness and fear that come from losing our footing. Our lives will always be provided for. The Lord guides and leads us on the right path toward eternal life.

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me, and I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish forever, and no one will snatch them out of My hand.” – John 10:27-28

2. He Is Faithful and Generous

“Even though I walk through the valley of deepest darkness, I will fear no evil, for You  are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” – Psalm 23:4-5

Becoming a Christian does not mean we are spared from problems. We may be shunned because we live rightly, or ridiculed because we do not follow the world's way of life. There is an enemy who wants to bring us down and grieve our hearts.

When we become followers of the Lord, His generosity will always be with us. He protects us from danger and gives comfort when we are sad or hurt. So detailed is the Lord in His care, He always makes sure to give the best to His children.

Whatever happens, we remain calm because the Lord lights every step of our lives. Jesus said, "I am the light of the world; whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (John 8:12).

With so much goodness that we receive, there is no reason to unfollow the Lord in our lives. Without Him, this life feels empty and meaningless. Let us become followers of the Lord who eagerly follow His way of life. Let His goodness and mercy dwell within us, and the house of the Lord will become the most beautiful place of waiting.

Psalm 23:6 “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever”
