When life is going well, smooth and free of struggle, and circumstances match our hopes, it feels easy to thank God. On the other hand, when we are disappointed, discouraged, rejected, or receive bad news, it is a great challenge to remain thankful.
But did you know that those difficult times are actually the best times for us to give thanks? Not only when we are on the mountaintop, but even in the darkest valley, we can still be thankful. From there, it will be seen that our sense of security and confidence come from God.
Therefore let us come boldly to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need. – Hebrews 4:16
So, what are the things we can be thankful for every day?
1. Thank You for His Grace
The first gift we must be thankful for is salvation. In essence, we were never worthy to receive forgiveness and salvation, no matter how godly we are, how hard we strive to live holy lives, or how much wealth we possess. Salvation is exceedingly costly and cannot be bought by man.
No one can redeem himself, or give to God a ransom for his life, for the redemption of his life is too costly and can never be enough forever. – Psalm 49:7-8
Another grace we should be thankful for is the Lord’s presence throughout our lives. The Lord gives help and a way out in the dark seasons of your life; delivers you from a fatal traffic accident; heals you from illness; and clears the way for you toward a good position or success in your work.
Remember that all of these are expressions of God’s love that you have been allowed to receive up to this day.
For from His fullness we have all received grace upon grace. – John 1:16
2. Thank You for His Blessings
The Lord never runs out of blessings for those who believe in Him. If today you have not received what you want, that does not mean the Lord has not blessed you. He has many ways to bless you and never runs short of blessings for you.
Every good gift and every perfect gift comes from above, coming down from the Father of lights; with Him there is no change or shadow due to turning. – James 1:17
Being thankful for every blessing, not only the big ones, but also the small and seemingly trivial ones, will make you happier and turn you into a grateful person.
Good days and bad days both should be received with thanks. Good days will make you glad, and on bad days, you can learn from mistakes and gain lessons from them. So, even in difficult circumstances, there is always something we can be thankful for. Blessings are not always the things we want or hope for.
3. Thank You for His Faithful Love
“But I show steadfast love to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.” – Exodus 20:6
How faithful are you to the Lord compared to your spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend, work, hobbies, or comfort?
There are many things that can weaken our faithfulness to the Lord. We forget to pray because our activities are too busy. By the time we get home, we are already tired and too lazy to open the Bible, and more interested in checking social media accounts. We cancel going to church because there is an event with office friends or because we want to go to the mall. Then, when problems begin to pile up, only then do we remember the Lord.
Try to remember again how faithful the Lord has been in loving you. Not for a single second has He left you, even when you forgot Him. The Lord constantly watches over, protects, and cares for you at all times.
Where can I go from Your Spirit, or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in the realm of the dead, You are there also... – Psalm 139:7-10
So, do not forget to say thank you for His faithful love!
4. Thank You for His Word
You may feel that life is hard. Problem after problem keeps coming, with no way out. Your fears and worries seem endless and impossible to remove. When this happens, where will you go for help?
I will run in the path of Your commandments, for You enlarge my heart. – Psalm 119:32
Did you know that the key answer to all your problems is already written in the Bible? It all depends on how you respond to it. Only the word of God can satisfy the questions in your life.
"If you abide in My word, you truly are My disciples." – John 8:31b
Reading the Bible every day is your expression of thanks for the word of God. And who will enjoy the benefit? Not God, but you yourself.
The list above could still go on. There are many things we can be thankful for every day. By saying thank you to the Lord, we acknowledge that we need Him. Start by being thankful for the small blessings, and over time, this habit will be built into a part of who you are. Give it a try!
