How to Train Your Mind: Training Your Mind to Stay Positive

Your mind determines the direction of your life.
There is a story of two people who both went through a breakup. One ended in suicide; the other went on to become a motivator.
They both faced the same problem, but their futures were different, because their ways of thinking were different.
The first person may have thought like this song: “I fell and can never get back up again ... Without you, I am a speck of dust ...” In the end, that person truly fell, could not get back up again, and became a speck of dust.
Meanwhile, the second person thought like this song: “The world is not over just because you broke up with me ...”
Why did these two people think so differently?
How can we have a positive mindset like the second person?
Train a Positive Mind with These 3 Things
1. You Are What You Feed
Have you ever heard the saying, “you are what you eat”? You are what you eat. Our bodies, our health, and our appearance depend on what we consume. If we eat healthy food, we will be healthy too. But if we eat carelessly, our bodies become sluggish, pale, dull, overweight / underweight, or even sick.
Just as food matters for the body, you also need to sort the intake that feeds your mind. You are what you feed. What you put into your mind shapes who you are.
What do you feed your brain every day? Positive or negative words? What songs do you listen to? Worship songs or songs about suicide / broken heart? What movies do you watch? Ones that inspire? Pornography? Or romantic dramas that consume your emotions and feelings? What do you read? The Bible? Edifying books? Or books filled with indecent stories?
The apostle Paul understood how important a positive mindset is. That is why he advised us to think about good things so that what shines from us will also be good.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent and worthy of praise, think about these things. – Philippians 4:8
Input that is good will produce output that is good. Input that is bad will produce output that is bad as well.
Today, what kind of “food” are you feeding your brain? If you want a positive mindset, aura, and attitude to come out of you, first put positive things into your mind.
2. You Are What You Have Faith In
A saying goes, “You are what you believe.” However, an even more accurate statement is “You are what you have faith in.”
Why?
Because believe only means to believe (without doing anything), whereas have faith means to believe and to act according to what we believe. Remember, faith without works is dead (James 2:26).
As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” After Jesus had entered the house, the two blind men came to Him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They answered, “Yes, Lord, we believe.” Then Jesus touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you.” – Matthew 9:27-29
Those two blind men were able to see because of what they believed. They did not just believe that Jesus was able to heal them; they also did their part by acting in line with that faith. No matter what people said, they kept crying out and following Jesus, asking for His mercy. As a result, they received healing according to their faith.
When you believe you will definitely pass an exam, but do not study, that is not faith, but an illusion. A daydream.
But it is different when you believe you will pass because you study and pray to God, that is what faith is. And, “According to your faith let it be done to you.”
The next question is: where does faith come from?
Faith comes from hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17). So, if you want to be a person of faith, read the word regularly.
To have a positive mindset, reflect on what you believe. Do you believe that you are very precious, or worthless? Do you believe that you surely can, or that you will not be able to? What things have you already done in line with your faith?
3. You Are All the People Who Surround You
Do not be deceived: Bad company corrupts good character. – 1 Corinthians 15:33
Perhaps you have heard statements like, “Add up the total income of your five closest friends, then divide by five; that is your income.” Or, “You are the average of all the people around you,” and the like. Whichever expression you know, the point is the same: your life will not be very different from the lives of the people closest to you. Training the mind begins with choosing a community. The Bible says, “Bad company corrupts good character.” If you are always with a group of people who like to lie, drink, lose their temper, speak filthy and harsh words, or crave gossip, that is what you become. Sooner or later, you will become like them.
To train your mind to stay positive, you must also be in a positive community. If you keep staying in a community that brings negative influence, that is called putting yourself to the test. Because, “No matter how clever a squirrel is at jumping, it will eventually fall to the ground.” If you keep remaining in a negative community, it is only a matter of time before you are carried away by its influence.
Your community helps determine your identity. If you are currently in a negative community, leave immediately before you fall deeper into it. Look for a positive community, because there you will meet positive people. Their way of thinking will become nutritious intake for your brain (you are what you feed) so that it can also produce positive thoughts.
Everything can be trained, including your mindset. To keep having positive thoughts, pay close attention to what kind of “food” we give to our brain, what kind of faith we have, and who the people closest to us are. Make sure all three are positive, and then our thoughts will become positive as well. And all of that depends on one thing: are you truly willing to train it?
