Preteens: New Season, Online Worship with New Friends
Times of transition are not always easy for everyone. This is what children experience as they move from childhood into the preteen years. From previously joining Sunday School services, as their needs change, they have to move up to the next level. Even though they are already able to attend the general service with their respective parents, they still need to adapt to this transition period of life.
When services were held online during the COVID-19 pandemic, preteens needed a special service for their age group. In other words, a service that was engaging and suited to their needs. In response to this need, GKDI Bangka (Pangkalpinang) also began a special online preteens service on October 10, 2020.
The format of the preteens service is the same as services in general, except that the duration is shorter and the material is adjusted to the needs of children their age. The structure can also be varied with quiet time and prayer together. Not only do they discuss God's Word, but in the service they also practice building self-confidence. Among other things, by asking questions and expressing opinions, as well as learning tips for presenting themselves well on digital platforms. This is certainly useful to apply in their teaching and learning activities at school, which are still being carried out online at this time.
GKDI Bangka is committed to holding preteens services every Saturday at five in the afternoon. At the second meeting, the children expressed their joy at having a worship gathering like this. They were also excited for the time when fellowship in person could be held. The mentors were also happy to see changes in their character; compared to the first meeting, they are now more confident and actively participating.
Not only with the local community, these children also join services with preteens communities in other regions of Sumatra, as well as cities across the archipelago, including Bandung. This opportunity has greatly increased their enthusiasm. Besides being able to learn topics presented by experts in the youth field, they also gain new friends and learn from peers their own age in discussion sessions.
Today, the format of GKDI's online services is getting better because everyone involved continues to learn, innovate, and keep up with technological developments. May this platform help our preteens know God, build character, and study the Bible more deeply, so that one day they may become true Christians. Amen.
