Will You Marry Me?

Will You Marry Me?

"Will you marry me?"

How many of us have experienced that moment and still feel the beauty of that memory? Do you still remember the nervousness, the fluttering heart, and the emotion that came when these words were spoken? Someone who made us feel accepted as we are, loved, supported, and so on, so that in the end we dared to make a choice to live together with that person forever.

Then now, perhaps your marriage has been a few months old, a few years old, or decades old. Do you still view your spouse the same way as when the moment "will you marry me" took place? Or are you now left wondering how someone you once saw as so right now only appears to be someone with so many faults and perhaps has even hurt your heart?

If your position right now is like the picture above, let me remind you that whoever your spouse was when you married them, and still is to this day, is a sinner. God Himself has told us in His Word in Romans 3:23, namely:

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God"

So, God has also never said that our spouse is a person without fault. But in practice, what often happens is that many people enter marriage with the hope that their life will be happier, more loved, more understood, and a whole list of thoughts that actually point to "me" or what I can indirectly get. Even though, the perspective we should have when entering married life is how you can live with that person's weaknesses for the rest of your life and what you can do to help your spouse overcome those weaknesses. Thinking like this will help you become more realistic, more able to accept your spouse's mistakes, and at the same time less selfish because this way of thinking directs you to give instead of demanding that what you want be fulfilled.

No marriage can instantly turn a sinner into an angel. Sin remains there, and how seriously an individual decides to put to death the desires of the flesh depends on how great the resolve is to live rightly before God, rather than merely the desire to be a good spouse. Because the desire to be a good spouse can fade when one party is hurt, has unmet needs, and many other things. But if living rightly before God is very important in someone's heart, then regardless of whatever status they have, they will take steps to be able to:

  • Love God and His Word, which is also the guide for life.
  • Grow respect for others through words, actions, and so on.
  • Recognize and crucify sin/the desires of the flesh that can separate them from God.
  • Improve the way they respond to pain, disappointment, anger, and sadness that can result from life's difficulties.
  • Pursue God's wisdom, not perfection.
Imagine if each individual had this awareness and did the things above, how much sadness, bitterness, division, and problems in marriage could be minimized? Right now, where do you stand? Are you an individual who sees living rightly before God as very important? What have you done to deepen the closeness of your relationship with God? Has the way you respond to pain, problems, and similar things become better?

Perhaps the opposite is also true, namely that right now you are emphasizing the mistakes your spouse has made, trying to "fix" your spouse instead of helping them in a constructive way, demanding that your spouse fulfill what you expect, or perhaps you are already too tired to do anything for your marriage? One important thing to remember is that ego will only make things worse, and what you consider right does not necessarily apply to your spouse. If these are the things you are experiencing, immediately seek help for your marriage and return to learning and building your foundation from the Word of God...because all the guidance is there. As it is said in Matthew 24:35:

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away."
