How SMART Is Your Goal or Purpose?

Creating a goal or purpose is something all successful professionals do. As Christians, we have a goal that the world cannot understand. Jesus has a purpose for us:

Luke 13:32 Jesus answered them, "Go and tell that fox, 'Today and tomorrow I will drive out demons and heal people, and on the third day I will finish My work.'

Having targets to reach our purpose is useful and effective. It makes us clear about the results we want to achieve. Breaking big problems into smaller points that are easier to accomplish makes our purpose more achievable. Big problems can be solved more easily when we divide them into several small goal s.

Even so, making small goals but not being able to achieve them will leave us disappointed. Have you ever thought about why you fail to achieve them? It is because the goal we make is not SMART ! I am not talking about our intelligence, but about a simple way of thinking in how we design that goal This way of thinking is called S.M.A.R.T., and this word means the following:

Specific

(specific) Measurable

(measurable) Achievable

(achievable) Relevant

(relevant) Time Oriented

(time-oriented)

We must make our goal or purpose according to this standard. We must first ask how specific it is, how measurable it is, how achievable it is, whether it is relevant, and whether it is time-oriented. If our goal does not meet these criteria, you must change it. Every element missing from S.M.A.R.T. increases the risk of not achieving our goal .

Here is an example of a goal that is not S.M.A.R.T.- “I will work overtime at least three times a week.”

Can you see what is wrong with this goal ? It is not specific. You do not say how many hours you will work overtime, or how many days a week. You also do not say when you will start and how long you will keep doing it. Because the words “work overtime” are not specific, there is no way to tell whether this goal is achievable or not.

A goal that is S.M.A.R.T. would look like this:“I will work 2 extra hours on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday starting next week, for 3 months, to increase my sales target this quarter.”

Goal This is very specific, easy to measure, achievable, relevant, and time-oriented. By using a system like this, it will be easier for us to accomplish our purpose.

You can apply this system to many things you want to achieve. Whether you want to increase your sales target, negotiate your salary, build a department, expand operations, or simply improve your performance.

Master this process, and it will help you see your work and the results of your work from a different perspective. It will help you stay focused on your goal .
