Who doesn’t know Nowela? This 2014 Indonesian Idol finalist now always seems to appear confident and give her all on stage. That is what we see today. This Batak-Papuan woman admits that in the past, she experienced something that made her go through an identity crisis, feel inferior or insecure, lose confidence, and even see herself as worthless.

As a child, Nowela went to school in a small city on the island of Java. There, people had lighter skin, straight hair, and spoke Javanese. Differences in physical appearance, skin color, and hair texture caused Nowela to be bullied by her school friends. Because she was often bullied, it left a very deep mark on her and affected many things. Nowela was not proud of her curly hair. When she was little, she would always straighten her hair, and even into adulthood, she kept changing hairstyles. The goal was for Nowela to gain acceptance from others.

Without realizing it, Nowela lost her self-confidence and sense of self-worth. But then, one thing happened in her life. It opened her eyes and led her to keep growing consistently, even to this day. Back then, it was as if she was walking with her eyes covered. But now, she understands that everything she went through had a reason. There is a plan of God that she now understands.
