CHANGE – Eastern Indonesia Conference (KIT) 2018

The large screen in the middle of the room showed a video of the journey of the church in Indonesia. Beginning in Jakarta, evangelism continued to other major cities, such as Surabaya, Medan, and ended in Jayapura. The atmosphere of dense forest and the tall, towering trees typical of Papua's fertile land brought the screening to a close.

Without pause, picking up where the video ended, the dancers performed Papuan folk dances. With engaging choreography, this dance told the story of the congregation's journey in the land of Papua.

Starting with the first Mission Team in Jayapura around twenty years ago, the congregation eagerly carried out evangelism and shared the good news with everyone. They went through joys and sorrows together, and God blessed them in extraordinary ways. Many people were won over and believed in Jesus. The church then grew to other cities, such as Manokwari, Sorong, and Ambon.

While everyone's eyes were still captivated by the storyline, suddenly the dancers invited the attendees to dance together.

Giving the message, “Come on, change. It is time to step out of comfort.” The participants welcomed the invitation. Some moved gracefully, while others were stiff because it was their first time trying the Yospan folk dance. Even so, everyone seemed to enjoy it and laughed freely.

That was the atmosphere at the opening of the first Eastern Indonesia Conference (KIT) in Papua on October 26, 2018. Held at Grand Abe Hotel, this conference was attended by approximately 300 participants from Jayapura, Manokwari, Sorong, Ambon, and the surrounding areas.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what the will of God is: what is good, pleasing to God, and perfect.” – Romans 12:2
The verse above became the foundation for the KIT 2018 theme, namely change (change). Comfort zones often become obstacles to growth. Yet Christians need change and renewal.

After the opening program, Rev. Charles Setiawan delivered a sermon titled Jesus Calls You to Change. Quoting Hebrews 12:2, he urged the congregation to focus on God, fixing their eyes on Jesus. Many people want to become Christians because they are drawn to the friendship of the community, or so they can become morally good. As a result, many Christians get trapped in comfort and routine. They forget to make changes.

On the first day of the conference, all participants received the same lesson material. On the second day, the participants were divided into several groups according to their ministry.

Opening the program at 9:00 a.m. WIT, the lesson for Youth and Singles Ministry, was Jesus Calls You to Change, to Influence Our Community. Rev. Sahat Hutagalung and his wife, Joyce, delivered the lesson for Youth Ministry, while the Singles Ministry material was presented by Rev. Muksen - Lily.

At 3:00 p.m., Rev. Franky Lumenta - Erly led the general session, as well as the final session of the second day, titled Changing from Within; See The Changing as The Eastern Indonesia. After that, the participants joined in free time and fellowship.

Konferensi - gkdi 12On the final day of the conference, which fell on Sunday, it closed with a thanksgiving service for God's faithfulness to the Papua congregation over the past two decades. Nearly 500 guests filled the room, praising and worshiping God together. Rev. Harliem Salim delivered a sermon titled Jesus Call You to Change, to Go and Make Disciple All of East Indonesia.

Konferensi - gkdi 13The Eastern Indonesia Conference became an important moment for the Papua congregation to step out of their comfort zone and welcome change. To rise up, receive God's calling, and proclaim salvation throughout the land of Papua. Up to the time this article was published, much good news had already come in. Some people decided to become true followers of Christ. Others began to open up and were willing to study the Bible. Glory be to the name of the Lord!

See you at the next KIT!
