Four Tips for Singing More Confidently in Church

Singing is an inseparable part of worship in church. Jesus and His disciples also sang when they gathered (Matthew 26:30). We also surely understand that we sing to worship and glorify the Most Great One. But why is it that we so often feel insecure about praising the Lord with all our heart in church?
Not everyone can sing as beautifully as the worship leader. Yet the fact is the Lord designed and equipped us to sing. In fact, He wants us to "...speak to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music to the Lord with all your heart" (Ephesians 5:19).
Perhaps like me, you are not someone who can naturally sing wholeheartedly in church. But that does not mean we cannot grow, right? Here are a few suggestions that can help us learn together to sing with all our heart and with more confidence in church.
1. Accepting the voice that the Lord has given us
Each person does have different vocal cords. So it is okay if our voice is not as beautiful as the finalists of Indonesian Idol. the Lordis the One who has woven it into part of who we are (Psalm 139:13). We can still sing and glorify the Lord with all our heart and full confidence.
2. Becoming familiar with the songs commonly sung in church
Be honest then, how often do we listen to our favorite songs? So often that without realizing it we already know the lyrics by heart. When we hear the song playing in a mall or cafe, we automatically sing along.
Now, try doing the same with songs of praise. It is not hard, is it to find songs that are commonly sung in church? You can make a playlist of worship songs. Then, when you hear a new song being sung, look for its title and add it to your playlist! When we remember the lyrics and melody better, we will be more confident when singing it in church.
3. Making praise part of quiet time
Quiet time is one of the best times to worship the Lord with all our heart. If you have not done this yet, try making singing part of your quiet time. When we sing and worship Him alone, we will more deeply absorb and understand the essence of worship itself.
Prepare songs that represent your heart to the Lord. You can schedule the songs you will sing for quiet time for a full week. Besides becoming praise that delights the heart of the Lord, this will be very helpful when it is time to sing together with the whole congregation in church.
4. Encouraging one another
Something no less important is encouragement from brothers and sisters in church. Sit with your friends. Before the service begins, encourage one another to sing wholeheartedly and with confidence.
To practice, you can also sing with friends outside the service. What about during spend time or hang out outside church? Besides being enjoyable, their smiles and encouragement will surely help us feel more relaxed and more eager to praise the Lord.
Remember, practice makes perfect. If we practice for other important things in life, why not do it to praise the Lord? Maybe professionally our voices do not meet the standard, but the Lord uses our heart as His standard. Besides that, when we sing together with fellow believers in church, we glorify Him as one body. Let us sing with confidence. Not because we are great, but because He is great! "Then the trumpeters and singers
raised their voices together
to sing praise
and thanks to THE LORD.
They lifted up their voices with trumpets,
cymbals and musical instruments
while praising THE LORD and saying:"
"For He is good!
His steadfast love endures forever!"
