Is It True That Honest People Never Prosper?

Some say it is very hard to find honest people these days. Honesty is one of the most sought-after and desired qualities in relationships, whether at work, friendship, or in marriage. We want other people to be honest with us. We do not like being deceived.

Yet, without realizing it, our own way of life is far from a picture of honesty. Perhaps we are influenced by sayings like: “Honest people are naive. In life, you do not need to be too straight. You need to be a little ‘crooked,’ so you do not lose out in competition and do not have to bear the risk.” Or this saying, which is just as well known: “If you are always honest, how can you ever succeed?”

Is that really true?

What does the Bible say about honest people?

Honest People See With Faith

“I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him back a report according to the truth.” – Joshua 14:7

Do you remember the story of the twelve spies in the land of Canaan (Numbers 13)? Of all the spies, only two brought a good report, namely Caleb and Joshua. The other ten spies brought a bad report: the people there were stronger, the land devoured its inhabitants, and they were descendants of giants (Numbers 13:31-33).

Which report was true: the one brought by Joshua and Caleb, or the one from the other ten spies? In the book of Joshua, we know that in the end the land of Canaan was successfully conquered. The spies who brought the bad report died by a plague before the Lord (Numbers 14:36-37).

How do you view life? When facing a difficult situation at work, do you see only the bad risks if you act or speak honestly? If so, be careful. You will be tempted to sin against your superior, and above all, against God.

When we lie, it may seem that we avoid the risk. We feel safe by covering up the real facts. But sooner or later, the truth will surely come out. God will not remain silent in the face of our dishonesty.

Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment. – Proverbs 12:19

Do not be afraid to speak honestly. If our motivation is what is right, whatever the risk, God will be with us. Honest people are not naive or foolish. On the contrary, honest people see everything with faith in God.

Help Is Available for Honest People

When my older sister worked at a wholesale bag store, she was often asked to make sales invoices, both fake ones and ones altered to suit the customers’ requests. In addition, she was also assigned to prepare unrealistic tax reports.

As she learned about sin, my sister realized that what she was doing was a lie and grieved God’s heart. She wanted to refuse her employer’s order to make fake tax reports and false invoices. At that time, my sister could only surrender and was also afraid of being fired or scolded.

After praying and fasting, my sister told her employer about it. Although at first she was sure she would be laughed at, it turned out that her employer did not fire her. In fact, in the end my sister became someone he greatly trusted.

He stores up help for the upright; He is a shield to those whose walk is blameless. – Proverbs 2:7

So, the assumption that honest people cannot succeed is mistaken. When we are honest, God will not fail to give help. He will go before us and work to resolve our problems in extraordinary ways.

Honest People Are Sincere

The honest are guided by their sincerity, but the treacherous are destroyed by their deceit. – Proverbs 2:7

Covering something up with lies or dishonesty will not make things better. We constantly feel anxious that what we have done will be exposed, and we are haunted by guilt. When the truth comes out, we only hurt the people who trusted us. Deceit will ruin our lives, even our future.

If we are sincere in our work, in friendship or in marriage, we will choose honesty above everything else. Do not be afraid to live honestly if you are sincere; God will surely be with you. The life of an honest person is pleasing to God, and is also sought after and valued by people. From this moment on, let us speak, act, and live honestly!
