How to Make Yourself Stand Out

Colossians 3:23  "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as for the Lord and not for men"

In the office there are certainly many workers. The law of labor supply says that “When many people are willing and able to complete a job, wages will be low.” And since we always strive to give more for God’s glory by using our careers for the greatness of His name, we must be different. We must stand out from the crowd.

Being part of the crowd will gradually erode our spiritual values and reduce our chances of being promoted. The best way to get promoted is through exposure, standing in the middle of the crowd, being different.

Here are several ways that can make you stand out much more:

Ask for tasks that others do not want to do or never even consider

The first and best way to be different is to stand where others do not want to. Ask for difficult jobs from your manager , do work outside your daily responsibilities. Ask for work that others are unable to do. It is like getting extra points at school. When you ask the teacher, the teacher will notice you.

Be full of the fruit of the Spirit in your workplace

Remember, you work for God, not for men. Your happiness should be felt by everyone. Be someone positive, a worker who WANTS to work. Greet your coworkers warmly and confidently. Show joy in conference call, every interaction, when you are in meetings, even in your spare time. Let your light shine before your coworkers and your boss.

Be someone who is always ready to help

How often have you said or thought to say, “I don’t want to do that, that’s not my job.” If you want to distinguish yourself, it means you must think as if you own the company, and everything is your job. Of course you cannot do EVERYTHING or expect to do everything perfectly, but sometimes there is an opportunity to help with something your coworker cannot do. Do it. Don’t overthink it. If there is a situation where a problem is being ignored or neglected, be the person who can handle it. Like a leaking water tank, you would not just stand there and cover the hole with your finger, would you? You would fix the leak.

Measure your own efforts

Many workers think that their manager will remember every good thing they do. It does not work that way. If you are trying to become a worker who stands out, you want your manager to be aware of it. This does not mean you are boasting. This is about measuring your efforts, and you must become good at it. Create a folder on your computer or perhaps in email where you can keep records of the extra work you have done. If a customer or coworker sends an email containing thanks, save it and send it to your manager You can write in the forwarded email words such as “I just wanted to let you know about the extra work I did for the company.”

Be available at all times

I hear Christians say this more than almost anyone else: “Office matters belong at the office, personal matters belong at home.” A good worker will bring at least a little of their work home. Answer office calls when they call you, even if it is outside working hours. Of course, you do not want them to take advantage of you, so be wise if this happens too often. The point is to be someone who is always available. Most people do not want to answer the phone outside working hours. If you do it, you will immediately look different from your coworkers. If you work in a company that expects this kind of action (always available 24 hours), focus your energy on contacting them first rather than waiting for them to call you.

Speak up, but not too much

A manager has to deal with many meetings. There will be an awkwardness when he holds a meeting and the participants seem reluctant to be there. Be brave and ask thoughtful questions. Take part in the topic and look for opportunities tosupport what your manager is trying to do. But be careful that you are not seen as asking too many questions. The key is to ask questions that show you understand what you are asking and that you truly care about the topic.

Be diligent in all your efforts

Although a Christian should be the most diligent kind of person, we are also vulnerable to neglecting our duties. Why should we be diligent? In the Bible diligence is spoken of more than 35 times and many examples are given where the concept of diligence is illustrated. It appears in the Old Testament and the New Testament. Finish your work on time and with a focused heart, then people will see you as someone dependable. This will make you look different.

Remember the things above. Share what you have learned with others, and build career relationships with other disciples. Talk about this concept and see what God will do.
