Heartbroken? Don't Worry, the World Hasn't Ended!

Have you ever loved someone with feelings beyond those of an ordinary friend? Then, just as you began to hope that one day you would spend your life with that person, that dream fell to pieces. The man or woman you love turns out not to have the same dream as you. The result: you are heartbroken.

The season after heartbreak is a hard period that you must go through. Just a moment ago, the man/woman you loved filled your days, giving you the chance to experience the beauty of being loved and loving. A moment later, that person no longer greets you, pays attention to you, stays with you, helps you, and comforts you. The world seems to stop turning, even to come to an end for you.

What should you do when this happens?

When Heartbroken: God Has the Best Plan

patah hati - gkdi 1

For My thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not My ways, says the LORD. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts. – Isaiah 55:8-9

When you are heartbroken, it is usually hard to accept and understand why God allowed it to happen. Why did He not allow you to be with the person you love forever? Surely God knows that only that person could make you happy, right?

This is a natural reaction when you are heartbroken, but as you struggle with this, remember this: our range of vision as human beings is very limited. Your plans can fail and be wrong. But God sees far ahead. He knows and is able to see your future. Therefore, what you need to do is:

1. Learn to Let Go and Trust

Be assured that His plan is the best for your life. Even though you are hurt, deeply wounded, and finding it hard to forget that person, learn to let go and trust the path God has planned for you.

Perhaps right now you do not understand His reasons, but in time, you will. God will show you why that relationship had to end. There is a reason behind everything. You just do not know it yet.

2. Do Not Let Heartbreak Steal Your Joy

Even if  your hope does not come to pass, do not let heartbreak steal your joy. Neither should heartbreak make you feel inferior, self-pity, or blame yourself. You are still yourself, beautiful and made in the image of God, whether you are single again or still have a partner.

3. Make Yourself Happy

Indeed, when we are heartbroken, we will lose the mood to carry on with activities as usual. However, constantly regretting it and dwelling on it will not make your life any better. And you are not completely powerless; you have the ability and the choice to rise out of the slump.

Comfort and make yourself happy. Do things that bring your heart joy, such as meeting friends, going to the movies, writing, reading, traveling, doing hobbies, or getting involved in ministry and social activities. When you help others, you will forget your own sadness. You will be able to see that your situation is not a final condition or endless suffering.

Reflect on and Hold Fast to His Word

patah hati - gkdi 5

I will keep Your law continually, forever and ever. I will walk in freedom, for I seek Your precepts. – Psalm 119:44-45

I lift up my hands to Your commandments, which I love, and I will meditate on Your statutes. Remember the word You spoke to Your servant, for You have given me hope through it. This is my comfort in my affliction, that Your promise gives me life. – Psalm 119:48-50

There was a time when I was close to a man. We were good friends and began to like each other. But one day, this man sent a message saying that his parents did not approve of our closeness. He apologized and chose to step back, unable to continue our friendship.

When I found that out, my heart was shattered. I was disappointed because it turned out that this man was not truly willing to fight for our relationship. I was confused as to why God gave me hope for a life partner, if in the end it was only wishful thinking.

On the other hand, rather than continuing to be gripped by that tightness in my chest, I wanted my heart to feel relief. So, after weeping and pouring out my heartache in prayer, I decided to read Psalm 119 above over and over again. Slowly but surely, I received the relief I had longed for as I reflected on this psalm.

I realized that heartbreak must not make me forget God's promises and laws. I resolved to keep loving His commandments because God is my hope and my comfort in suffering. His promise raises me up to go on living with joy.

The following three ways can help you find relief:

  • Do not reread his/her messages or love letters, look at the photos, or recall the beautiful times together, so that you do not sink deeper into sadness. Instead, read God's Word to gain relief and strength.

  • Share your feelings with a friend who can strengthen and support you to move on. A good friend will not trap you in drama and gossip, much less encourage you to take revenge or do things that are not in line with God's will.

  • Get involved in spiritual activities, or join a community whose members can help you understand God's Word better.

Draw Near to God

patah hati - gkdi 6

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted, and He saves those who are crushed in spirit. – Psalm 34:18

Whether you realize it or not, in your season of heartbreak, God is actually closest to you. He is present when you are down, broken, disappointed, and grieving. Even if you cannot feel it, God is near you, and He cares about your heart. So come into God's presence and draw near to Him. Ask for His help through prayer, the reading of His Word, fellowship, and by studying His Word more deeply.

Indeed, you need time to heal your heart, but do not lose faith and hope. You are not the only person who has gone through a breakup. Many people have experienced it and they were able to rise again; that means you can too. What is certain is this: remember that God is always with you. He will help and heal the wounds of your heart. Amen.
