Being a Light to Other Families

Past trauma and not knowing what a healthy family should look like can make it difficult for someone to build a happy home. Yet, with strong resolve and the support of the right community, it is not impossible for us to create a household full of love. This was proven by Alex and Yunita, a couple from Married Ministry Surabaya Congregation who experienced a major transformation in their marriage.

During his childhood, Alex often witnessed his parents fighting, and even experienced physical violence in the family. This caused him to grow up insecure and avoid conflict, and it also led to a troubled married life. By the sixth year of their marriage, the conflict between Alex and his wife, Yunita, had continued to worsen until it reached the ears of their extended family. 

Feeling that something was wrong in his marriage, Alex shared his story with Dedy, the husband of his cousin Meifie, who was a church member. He felt that Yunita could not understand his feelings, and they always misunderstood each other in communication. Every time they argued, Alex would vent his emotions excessively, such as shouting harsh and inappropriate words. When he found it difficult to express his thoughts and feelings, he would hurt himself by banging his head, hitting walls, or kicking the things around him.

In addition, Alex also struggled with a smoking habit and pornography consumption. Every time he fell into it, he was driven to repent, but he always ended up falling back into the same sin.

Dedy then invited Alex to join a Bible discussion. It was then that Alex realized that he and his wife needed a community that could direct their lives. As it turned out, Alex had long desired to be guided in the Lord.

In April 2018, Alex attended his first worship service. The sermon preached that day touched his heart deeply and gave him motivation to make changes in his life. He then invited his wife to worship together and study God's word. Although Yunita initially refused, Alex did not give up. He prayed that God would move his wife's heart. Not long after, Yunita was willing to go to worship with him.

They began studying God's word on April 27, 2018. In the learning process, Yunita had to struggle to control her anger, especially toward their children. Apparently this had triggered communication problems in both of their children, who also banged their heads against the wall to express their anger.

Both of them were also guided to carry out their respective roles in the family properly and in balance. Alex learned to be a good head of the family. As a father, he was no longer indifferent, but took part in raising the children, such as making time to talk with them and advise them. On the other hand, Yunita learned to respect Alex more, and to communicate her feelings and opinions well.

On May 19, 2019, the two of them made the decision to be baptized together. Now their marriage has changed 180 degrees. Their children have also become calmer, are able to interact and express their emotions well, and are willing to greet other people.

Not only that, the restoration of Alex and Yunita's marriage also had a positive impact on their extended family, who witnessed for themselves the significant change in both of them. Now, Yunita's older sibling, her in-law, her in-law's older brother, as well as their children are also studying the Bible. Even Yunita's mother and the mother-in-law of Yunita's older sibling have also started attending Sunday worship regularly.

After experiencing an extraordinary life transformation in the Lord, Alex and Yunita are eager to share the good news with the people around them. They want to continue being used by God to help other married couples, and to serve faithfully until the end of their lives. Amen.
