Good News from the Palangka Raya Congregation - Maria

Enthusiastic About Living the Right Lifestyle

After coming to know God, the next challenge we face is how to change our lifestyle so that it matches His word. Not infrequently, this makes someone reluctant to continue with the intention of becoming a follower of Christ. Maria, however, was different, a college student from Medan who made the decision to become a disciple of Jesus on July 28, 2019.

While studying at one of the universities in Palangkaraya, for the first time Maria lived apart from her family. Gaining freedom without direction, Maria lived a wasteful, lazy, undisciplined lifestyle, and became accustomed to negative everyday speech.

In her second semester, Maria came to know the community of Jesus’ disciples through a sister who was her upperclassman. Touched that there was someone who cared about her life, Maria began to give her heart to learning God’s word.

As time went on, Maria, who felt a difference in her life, began trying to live in an orderly way. Although it was not easy at first, Maria kept striving to leave her bad habits behind—from waking up late and often being late for class, to conversations that were not uplifting. She learned to be frugal and to be content with what she had.

Not only that, Maria also admitted her wrongdoing to the grandmother who had cared for her since senior high school. Seeing the change in her attitude moved her grandmother deeply, because Maria not only forgave, but also asked her forgiveness.

A consistent relationship with God through prayer and quiet time made Maria even more certain about becoming a true Christian. She even used her vacation time to study the word and continue being guided in the Lord. Maria spent time with the sisters in Campus Ministry and Singles & Professionals Ministry, and took part in various spiritual activities.

Maria’s effort to change her old lifestyle was not in vain. After experiencing true repentance, she became even more enthusiastic about pursuing a righteous life. Even after becoming a disciple of Jesus, a teachable heart was still reflected in her. It did not take long for Maria to offer herself to help shape other people’s lives. And this, of course, had an extraordinary impact, both on the congregation and on her campus friends.
