GKDI English Ministry (GEM)

As young Indonesians return home after studying or living abroad, many face significant social or language barriers as they begin readjusting to life in Indonesian society. Especially when searching for a spiritual community, many struggle to find a community with similar life experiences and a shared purpose in God and the Bible.

Young, spiritual, dynamic

With this demographic in mind, the GKDI English Ministry (GEM) was formed, which also stands for God, Each-other & Mission. GEM is a community of young adults, including professionals and entrepreneurs, both married and single. They primarily speak English as they focus on building spiritual community and deep discipleship relationships with one another. GEM is a fun, loving, family-like fellowship that can support young people in their spiritual and professional lives.  

As Christians, our faith is challenged every day, and the battle is always more difficult when we fight alone. Having a community like GEM that can support, understand, and help young people in this transitional season of their lives will enable them to succeed not only in their careers and personal lives, but ultimately in their spiritual relationship with God.

The power of community

“Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.” (1 Corinthians 12:12-13)

The key to finding our purpose in God is found through community. As St. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 12, we are all different ‘parts’ in terms of our backgrounds and our talents or gifts. However, it is only when we come together as one ‘body’ that we find our purpose in God; we learn what kind of function God designed for us. Community has the power to give us an identity and purpose in God that we could never find otherwise.

Spend Time (An informal, more personal meetup)

Tailored to meet individual needs, this casual meetup allows you to spend quality time with one or two members of the GEM community. Whether it is discussing your personal struggles or learning the basics of discipleship, everyone in GEM leaves a spend time feeling refreshed and spiritually nourished. “See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. (Hebrews 3:12-13)

H20 (Healthy Hang-Out)

Healthy Hang-Outs consist of fun group activities that allow the GEM community to grow closer to one another. From dinners, rock climbing, coffee, sports, or serving in the local community, H20 always provides a fun, refreshing, and constructive atmosphere. "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching." (Hebrews 10:24-25)

GEM-Talk (A biweekly discussion event)

GEM-Talks are an opportunity to hear inspiring talks on a range of topics, such as how to stay spiritual in business and how to deal with conflict in relationships. Typically, GEM hosts guest speakers who are Christian businesspeople. There is usually great food and fellowship, as well as smaller breakout group discussions that allow people to engage with one another, the topic of discussion, and the word of God.
