Your Word Is a Lamp to My Feet

Just imagine, when you are in a dark room, what do you feel? How long can you stay there? And even if you could endure it, how much could you do in that condition?

I once experienced a sudden power outage one night. At that moment I was alone in my room scrolling through my Instagram account. My first reaction was to freeze and try to stay calm, while continuing to open various apps on my phone. But after a while, negative thoughts began to appear and made me afraid, especially as the air in the room felt more and more stuffy.

While I was opening one of the apps, suddenly horror music started playing, and I immediately moved my fingers back to Instagram to look for funny videos to cheer me up. But unfortunately, the funny video I watched ended with the appearance of a horror ghost meant to startle viewers. Spontaneously I turned off my phone and ran out of the room, calling for my boarding house friend to make sure I was not alone.

My heart calmed a little when I found one of my boarding house friends. But there was still a feeling of anxiety tucked away in my heart. Even the sound of our conversation was not enough to drive that feeling away. All the anxiety and fear disappeared when a light suddenly appeared from a candle.

This simple event taught me one important thing: when facing darkness, it is not money, friends, work, or possessions that I need most, but above all a lamp or light. It is not much different in life as a Disciple of Jesus. This world is covered in darkness, as stated in 1 John 5:19: “...we know that we are from God, and the whole world lies under the power of the evil one.” Living in a dark world, every person experiences fear. Whether because the direction of life is unclear, because there are many things we cannot control, or because of an inability to escape the grip of sin.

The question is, why do most people choose to live in darkness? As Christians, there are several things we can reflect on so that we may always have that lamp.

1. As a Christian, what is the lamp in my life?

The Bible has stated it very clearly. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” In Psalm 119:97, David says, “...I meditate on it all day long.” David made the Word his primary need in life, a lamp for his every step. He did not meditate on it only in the morning or only during quiet time, but all day long. Like my story above, darkness can strike suddenly; we need light at every moment in our lives.

2. How do we make God's Word a lamp in our lives?

”If you remain in My word, you truly are My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31) A mature Christian is a Christian who knows and practices the Word of God in his or her life.

It is the Word that will bring wisdom into our lives and give us hope throughout our life's journey. “Remember also that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom and lead you to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 3:15) The lamp of the Word will direct a person's steps, guiding him or her in every choice to lead that person to eternal salvation.

“All Scripture inspired by God is indeed useful for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting behavior, and for training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16) Like a lamp, which enables us to see our mistakes, to be taught, to correct our behavior, and to be trained, so the Word of God should function in our lives.

So, let us reflect on our condition right now. Are we always living in the light, or are we in the process of moving toward that light? Or perhaps we are still comfortable in the dimness of the world, or even in darkness? Wherever we are right now, we can always come out of the darkness and come to the light by making His Word a lamp for our lives.
