Finding “Your Rebekah”

One of the inspiring love stories in the Bible is the story of Isaac and Rebekah. Interestingly, the story does not focus on their relationship after they met, but how the two of them came to meet.

So many people are looking for a life partner; you may be one of them. The journey of love usually begins with finding the right person, your “Rebekah.” The question is, how?

A Strategic Guide to Finding “Your Rebekah”

To understand Rebekah’s story, read Genesis 24 first. Based on that chapter, we know that Isaac was not the one who went on an adventure to find his match. He simply received Rebekah. It was Abraham who gave the orders and directions, while his servant technically searched for and found Rebekah. Armed with extraordinary faith, conviction, and obedience, this servant succeeded in finding someone special for his master’s son.

The experience of Abraham’s servant can inspire us in shaping our strategy and attitude of faith as we search for “Rebekah,” our future life partner.

Here are three steps we can apply to find “Rebekah”:

1. Put God First in Your Priorities (Make God Your Top Priority)

"Abraham said to the oldest servant of his household, who had charge of all that he owned, "Please place your hand under my thigh ...”

“… that I may make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from among the Canaanite women among whom I dwell.”

“But you shall go to my country and to my relatives and take a wife for my son Isaac.” – Genesis 24:2-4

Abraham told his most senior servant to go to his hometown and find a wife for Isaac. Abraham’s number one rule was that he must not take a Canaanite woman, but one from his own relatives.

Why was that?

Because Abraham wanted the woman who would one day become his son’s wife to be someone who feared God. At that time Abraham lived in Canaan, a people who did not know God. Abraham refused to compromise and become disobedient to God by allowing Isaac to marry someone who did not know God.

It is worth noting that Abraham did not ask his servant to look for someone beautiful, rich, or intelligent. He had a priority when choosing a partner for his son: fearing God was the main requirement. Abraham even told his servant to bind himself with an oath about this as proof of how serious he was about that priority.

What priority do you place first in a future spouse? Beauty or handsomeness? Someone rich, smart, and talented? Or someone who truly fears God?

Then what about you? If you hope to find someone with that quality, have you yourself become someone who fears God?

2. Pray Specifically (Pray specifically)

“The LORD, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my relatives, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, ‘To your descendants I will give this land’ He will also send His angel before you, so that you may take a wife from there for my son.” – Genesis 24:7

Abraham’s words gave faith to his servant. Before this servant departed, Abraham said: “The LORD, the God of heaven … He will also send His angel before you, so that you may take a wife from there for my son.” Indirectly, Abraham assured his servant that God would be with him on his journey.

Because of the confidence he had planted, this servant also prayed specifically for God.

Then he said: "LORD, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today, and show steadfast love to my master Abraham.” – Genesis 24:12

“Here I am, standing by the spring, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. Let it be that the young woman to whom I say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who answers, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels also’ let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. By this I will know that You have shown steadfast love to my master.” – Genesis 24:13-14

As a result, God truly showed Rebekah to him. Rebekah’s actions were exactly as he had asked in prayer, so this servant knew that she was the young woman chosen by God for Isaac.

In your journey of looking for a life partner, have you asked God to show you specifically who that person is? God today is just as powerful as God in Abraham’s time. Believe that when you ask specifically, you will also receive specifically. Include God in your adventure of finding “Rebekah,” and let God write your love story!

3. Value Characters Over Beauty and Everything Else (Value character above everything else)

Look again at verses 13 and 14 in the second point. What sign did this servant want from Isaac’s future wife?

“Here I am, standing by the spring, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. Let it be that the young woman to whom I say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who answers, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels also’ let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. By this I will know that You have shown steadfast love to my master.” – Genesis 24:13-14

Abraham’s servant asked God for a woman who was diligent and hardworking. A woman who would go out in the evening to draw water from the well. Also, someone kind and full of empathy, willing to give a stranger a drink.

Besides that, he also wanted a woman who had care and initiative, and was willing to go the extra mile. Without being asked, she was willing to water all ten of his camels. A camel can drink two hundred liters of water in three minutes. So imagine how many trips Rebekah had to make carrying water for his camels!

This servant could have prayed to be shown someone with beauty on the level of Miss Universe. However, that was not what he hoped for. He was looking for someone with beautiful character, something more valuable than beauty, wealth, intelligence, and everything else.
