Church Theme for October 2020 - Undivided Devotion

The word devotion can have two meanings, namely faithfulness or dedication. When it relates to dedication, it cannot be separated from service and sacrifice.
One clear example of devotion in the context of dedication can be seen in the marriage relationship. When someone gets married, they devote themselves to their spouse. Which means there will be love, sacrifice, and service to their spouse.
Paul, in his letter to the church in Corinth, expressed what was in his heart, that he was concerned if the congregation's devotion to God became disrupted. In 1 Corinthians 7: 35 (MEV), the words undivided devotion are translated as service without distraction. And in this context, the distraction is in the area of purity.
I say this for your own benefit, not to put any restraint upon you, but for what is proper, and that you may serve the Lord without distraction. -1 Corinthians 7:35 (MEV)
The book of Ecclesiastes describes a person who does not restrain himself from things that can distract his heart from God.
I did not withhold my eyes from anything they desired, and I did not keep my heart from any pleasure, for my heart rejoiced in all my labor. This was the reward of all my labor. - Ecclesiastes 2:10 (TB)
In the book of Ecclesiastes we can learn what things can become distractions or disturbances in our love and devotion to God:
- Self-Pleasure (Ecclesiastes 2:1-6)
- Wealth ( Ecclesiastes 2:7-8a)
- Sexual pleasure ( Ecclesiastes 2:8b-9)
- Selfishness (Ecclesiastes 2:11-15)
In the end, after trying and having all those things, Solomon, the writer of Ecclesiastes, realized that all of it was utterly meaningless, like chasing the wind.
Sometimes we can see these distractions as blessings or the pleasures of life. In fact, these are the very things that can make our devotion to God divided and disrupted. So, let us keep striving to devote ourselves and serve the Lord without distraction!
