Inspired by Her Family’s Example to Love God’s Word and Forgive
Coming to know Christ in old age is no easy matter, much less forgiving those who have done wrong. Yet Aciu, a 62-year-old mother from Pangkalpinang, was willing to do both. Born and raised in a family that did not know Jesus, she came to know the Lord through the example of her child’s family, as well as her husband, who was baptized at the end of 2019.
After becoming disciples of Jesus seven years ago, Aciu’s child and child-in-law sought to evangelize and introduce their parents to Jemaat Bangka (Pangkalpinang). This long struggle finally bore sweet fruit: their father and mother have now become disciples of Jesus. On January 5, 2020, Aciu made the decision to make Jesus her Lord and Savior.
At first Aciu was drawn to Christianity because she saw the changes in her child’s family after they followed Jesus. Only after her husband became a Christian did she want to study the Bible. In order to follow Jesus, her husband took a major step in his repentance. In addition to leaving behind worship traditions, he also asked forgiveness from his neighbors, even though he used to insist that he was not at fault. All of this encouraged Aciu to know the Lord more deeply.
Praise God, during her Bible study, Aciu’s understanding was opened so that she could see how Jesus is a Lord full of love and forgiveness. This changed her view about forgiving others.
The next challenge she had to face was independence and worry. Because she had been used to relying on herself from a young age, Aciu did not know whom to place her hope in, especially when experiencing failure. This made her easily anxious about the future. Now she relies more on the Lord through prayer, and so has peace in her heart and security in the Lord.
Over time Aciu has grown to love God’s word more and more and enjoys reading the Bible together with her husband at home. She does not only listen, but also makes sure of the source which book it is from, which chapter, and which verse. If there is something she does not understand, she never hesitates to ask her brothers and sisters in the faith.
Aciu’s baptism then inspired one of her children, who had once expressed a desire to have the same faith as the rest of the family. Starting from that statement, this child is now being helped to know the Lord by a disciple of Jesus, who is also Aciu’s child-in-law.
Jemaat Bangka (Pangkalpinang) also rejoices over Aciu’s baptism, which can have an impact on the evangelism of other congregation members. Their faith has been strengthened even more that their parents too may one day become disciples of Christ. May we hear much more good news about new baptisms. Amen!
