THE LORD IS MY VICTORY (YAHWEH NISSI)

Exodus 17:15, Then Moses built an altar and named it: "The Lord is my banner."

Moses led the people of Israel to war against the Amalekites, and Israel's victory or defeat depended on Moses. When Moses lifted up his hands (prayed), Israel prevailed; when Moses lowered his hands, Israel was defeated. After the victory was complete, Moses declared that the Lord was the one who had given them victory. When Moses lifted up his hands, which in Jewish tradition is prayer, God gave the victory.

Verses for Reflection:

Psalm 60:6, "To those who fear You, You have given a banner, a sign of refuge from the arrow."

Isaiah 5:26, "He will raise a banner to a nation far away, and whistle for them from the ends of the earth; surely they will come with speed, swiftly!"

Isaiah 49:22-23, "Thus says the Lord GOD: 'Behold, I will lift up My hand as a sign to the nations and raise My banner to the peoples; then they will carry your sons in their arms, and your daughters will be borne on their shoulders. Kings will be your guardians, and their queens your nursing mothers. They will bow down to you with their faces to the ground and lick the dust of your feet. Then you will know that I am the LORD, and those who wait for Me will not be put to shame.'"
