What Is Good Enough Parenting?

Good Enough Parenting draws on perspectives from the Bible, credible research, and the life experience of John and Karen Louis as counselors and parents, together with the wisdom of eight church elders and their families, to provide inspirational, thoughtful, practical, and rational guidance for parents. This book introduces four plus one core emotional needs of children and explains why meeting those needs is crucial for raising children who are emotionally and spiritually healthy.

Parents will also learn to avoid “Exasperation Interactions” (irritating interactions) and “Vortex of Conflict Escalation” (a vortex of escalating conflict), as well as ways to “Repair and Reconnect” (repair and reconnect) relationships with your teenage and adult children.

Research has already proven that if a child’s core emotional needs are not met during the formative years, “Schemas” or life traps will form. These core emotional needs are:

Connection & Acceptance (connection & acceptance) Healthy Autonomy & Performance (healthy autonomy & performance) Reasonable Limits (reasonable limits) Realistic Expectations (realistic expectations) And the “plus one” need  Spiritual Values & Community (Spiritual values & community)

Although no parent is perfect, Good Enough Parenting offers step-by-step guidance on how parents can learn to meet core emotional needs, and provide care that is good-enough (good enough) to prevent schemas or life traps from forming in their children. Good Enough Parenting, parenting guide,  developed by John and Karen Louis and based on schema therapy researched by Dr. Jeffrey Young.

“In a world overflowing with information, ‘Good Enough Parenting’ uses films to teach parents how to meet their children’s core emotional needs, while at the same time showing them how to prevent passing their dysfunctional behavior down to their children. Schema therapy for adults has already proven successful, but I have greatly wanted to see someone do schema prevention, or life-trap prevention, for children, and this (Good Enough Parenting) is the answer!

~ Dr Jeffrey Young, Dept of Psychiatry, Columbia University, USA
