3 Reasons Why We Need to Keep Learning

There is a saying that learning is not limited by age. From school age to old age, there are still things that need to keep being learned. New things keep coming one after another, such as technology, values, and ways of relating to people. 

However, you may think: I am already old, it is too late for me to learn, I do not feel I can grow anymore. Do you know that age and season of life are not barriers to learning?

Keep Learning Into Old Age

Speaking of a heart that never stops learning, there is a woman who dreamed of earning her bachelor’s degree in her later years. She was Hazel Soares. As written by dunia.tempo.co, she succeeded in earning her bachelor’s degree at the age of 94. This woman from San Laendro graduated from Mills College, a women’s arts college in Oakland. Her status as a grandmother of 6 children and 40 grandchildren did not keep her from her dream of earning a bachelor’s degree. Through much struggle, she achieved it. 

This story above is truly inspiring to me. It turns out that learning never ends. At any age, it is not a barrier to doing it. It all depends on our willingness and self-awareness. 

Why Is a Willingness to Learn Good?

As in the story above, even someone who is elderly can keep learning. This can be an inspiration for us, so that we keep growing and developing.

Where does it begin? It begins with a heart attitude that never stops being willing to learn. Here are the reasons why we need to keep learning in this life.

1. Nothing Is Certain in This World

Did we ever expect the Covid-19 pandemic to come or the Russia-Ukraine war? It seems not. Yet what can we do, everything can happen outside human control.

If we are secure right now, that does not necessarily mean we will be in the future. No one knows what will happen next. Therefore, we need to be ready to adapt to the changes in the world. 

We can learn new skills, which will increase the family’s income. We can also analyze financial patterns, such as how and how much we spend. In addition, we can learn from mistakes in using money. Learning new things will prepare us to face an uncertain future. 

James 4:14 yet you do not know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? Your life is like a mist that appears only for a little while and then vanishes. 

Nothing is certain in this world. There is no guarantee that things will always be fine. If life is like a mist, we know that we need to keep being prepared.

2. People and Circumstances Can Change

Besides uncertainty, another reason we need a learning heart is because people and circumstances are always changing.

A person’s free time is also sometimes not the same from one season to another. Some change jobs, change positions and responsibilities in their work. Others carry an increasing load of responsibility. Therefore, we need to adjust ourselves to the circumstances that exist. Also, learn the right way to relate to them.

1 Corinthians 9:20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those who live under the law I became like one living under the law, though I myself do not live under the law, so that I might win those who live under the law.

Like Paul, who tried to adapt to others, we can do the same. Because people’s circumstances are not always the same, we need to learn the right ways to adapt and to be on target.

An economy full of question marks. Married life that requires mutual adjustment. A child’s development that is sometimes beyond expectation, especially with technology becoming more and more unrestricted. How can we adapt to all those circumstances, if we do not have a learning heart?

3. Being Willing to Learn Is the Attitude of a Follower of Christ

Psalm 119:73 Your hands have made me and formed me; give me understanding, that I may learn Your commandments. 

The Lord has arranged and placed every human life. Sometimes there are challenges that feel hard to get through. Sometimes, we do not understand the Lord’s purpose behind it all. 

As believers, a willingness to learn is His will. We need to learn His Word and His will. In this way, we will be equipped to live this life. Believe it, the Lord will guide us in living in this world!

There is no such thing as being finished with learning. As long as we are still breathing and healthy enough to be active, we need to keep doing it  

The Lord will smile and rejoice to see us, His children. The condition is that we keep trying to improve and increase our ability in living this life.
