Almost all of us long for life that is meaningful, not life that is empty. We feel valuable when we can be useful to others. We feel happy when we can fill life with useful things. Yet sometimes reality is not as we dreamed.
Sometimes, there is a feeling that our life feels empty. It feels boring, there is no motivation, and it feels hollow. We ask, “What is actually the purpose of life ? Will it always be like this, or is there something more meaningful?”
An Empty Life? What Does That Mean?
Let us reflect for a moment! What do you think life that is empty means?
Among other things, it means being without content, hollow, lacking enthusiasm, and lacking meaning. If so, life that is empty can be understood as life that lacks passion, does not feel significant, or feels that something is still missing in this life .
Is something still missing in this life ? Should not a good career, enough money and possessions in abundance, and a beautiful spouse be able to fill that emptiness ? If not, then there is one thing far more extraordinary that can make our lives feel fulfilled and meaningful.
When Life Feels Empty
A close friend of mine once felt weary and bored with life. After graduating from a very well-known public university in Indonesia, he got his dream job. He achieved the position or rank he wanted. His life looked happy and as if he had everything. However, he said to me, “I am not happy. Every time I come home from work, I just stay at home. I have no friends and no other activities. I do not want to keep living like this.”Day after day, he went through the same routine. Work, go home, then rest. There was no purpose or any other useful activity in his life. Deep in his heart, he was lonely. My friend longed for a community that would listen to his struggles and help him know God better.
After he found a community that loved God and loved one another in the right way, his life began to change. He began to pray, read God’s Word, and meditate on it every day. His days were no longer the same. He used his free time to help and love the lives of others.
Now, he no longer feels empty in his life. He feels that his life is far more meaningful and useful. He found God’s plan for his life.
Finding a Meaningful Life
The life story of my friend has inspired me and helped me understand life that is more meaningful. A relationship with God and a healthy community lead to true fulfillment (fulfillment). How can life not feel empty? Here are steps we can try:
1. Offer Your Whole Life to God
Everyone has a purpose in life. Some want to become rich, succeed in work, have a very beautiful spouse, want to live happily, and have other goals . Of course, that is not wrong. We have the right to have goals and dreams in life in this world. However, if we are honest, all of this is centered on our own desires. Even if we already have all of it, the feeling of emptiness will not necessarily go away.
The true purpose of life must surely go beyond ourselves. What purpose has God set?
Romans 12: 1 Therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercy of God I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, living, holy and pleasing to God: this is your true worship.
This, then, is the chief purpose of life : to offer our whole life to God. If we have this purpose, we will be driven to pursue God and His will, more than our own desires. We will also be motivated to love others. Our attitude toward friends, siblings, and family will change for the better.
The life He gives is not a life focused on personal comfort. Rather, it is a life that loves God and others.
2. Seek God Wholeheartedly
After deciding to offer your life to God, the next step is to seek God earnestly.
Jeremiah 29:12-13 Then when you call on Me and come and pray to Me, I will listen to you;
when you seek Me, you will find Me, if you seek Me with all your heart,
Besides living to glorify His name, God also wants us to seek Him. This means that we strive to draw near to Him and have fellowship with Him.
How do we do that? By studying God’s Word and praying every day. Doing both will give us wisdom in living this life .
3. Have a Community That Loves God and Others
Loneliness will make life feel emptyeven more. There is no friend to share joys and sorrows with. There is no friend to remind us of our mistakes. When we fall and need help, there is no friend ready to support us.
Therefore, we need a community that is healthy, strengthening, and loves God.
With them, we will strive together to love God. We will build up and support one another. We will also have friends to enjoy life with in a pure way. Is it not beautiful to have friendship like that?
With God, Life Will Be Meaningful
God Will Fill the Emptiness in Your Life
Understanding God’s plan in human life is one of the keys to overcoming a life that feels empty. In our daily lives, we can study His Word, meditate on it, and fellowship with God through our personal prayers. And let us not forget to use our time to love others.
Let us together fill our lives with glorifying His name! Let others feel God’s love through our lives !
