3 Marks of a Spiritually Paralyzed Person

Spiritual paralysis and physical paralysis, which one do we recognize?

The two main dimensions of human life are the physical and the spiritual. One can always be compared with the other, but the spiritual is clearly more important than the physical. Even so, most people focus more on physical matters. Even worse, this is often found among those who are called spiritual leaders or religious.

On one occasion the Lord Jesus healed a man who had been paralyzed for a very long time, but in that story there was also a spiritual paralysis that proved far worse, and it was experienced precisely by the religious leaders and spiritual figures of that time. The one who was physically sick was healed by the Lord Jesus together with his spiritual healing, but the teachers of the law remained spiritually paralyzed.

Perhaps we are not that physically paralyzed man, but could it be that we are the spiritually paralyzed one?

Matthew 9:5 Which is easier, to say, Your sins are forgiven, or to say, Rise and walk? 6 But so that you may know that the Son of Man on this earth has authority to forgive sins" then He said to the paralyzed man: "Rise, pick up your mat and go home!" 7 And the man got up and went home.

Actually the Lord Jesus did 3 things in this event, namely: 1. Forgiving the sins of a poor man, 2. Revealing hidden thoughts. 3. Healing a paralyzed man instantly and completely. But such is the condition of those who are spiritually paralyzed, not one of those miracles touched their hearts and lives. Miracles that made other people's eyes turn to God instead became the occasion for them to display their paralysis in the following ways.

Marks of a Spiritually Paralyzed Person

1. Unable to see what is good

People who are spiritually paralyzed always see bad things. Without realizing it, they are inviting bad things to happen in their lives. God's wrath is very clear against those who choose to live that way.

In our togetherness with other people, whether in the family, in church, or at the office, the question is this: what becomes the focus of our attention and conversation? bad things or good things? The more able we are to see the good in others, in God, and in life, and tell it to other people, the more we will be healed from spiritual paralysis.

2. Unable to say what is true

The Lord Jesus knew His words would trigger such a response in the hearts of these religious people, but He spoke them deliberately because He wanted to declare what is true whatever the risk. If no one declares the truth, then clearly the One harmed is God Himself. He who is the truth must not simply be left unspoken; He must be spoken of and declared earnestly.

That is why we who believe in Him must speak about His truth so that others understand what is true and choose that truth for their lives. God will not remain silent when we speak the truth. He will surely defend us. But those whose spirits are paralyzed, let alone speaking what is true, are offended and react badly even when they merely hear the truth.

3. Unable to rise

If that paralyzed man immediately rose after Jesus forgave his sins, these people who are spiritually paralyzed have no hope of rising again. The Lord Jesus showed how much more tragic it is to be spiritually paralyzed than to be physically paralyzed.

The Lord is extraordinary and loves everyone so deeply and so well; we need to learn that same heart, rise up and be passionate about becoming proclaimers of God's truth!
